Max's POV-
My mom, Delilah, Jane and I were at a Christmas tree farm picking a tree the day after Thanksgiving because it was a tradition of ours. It sounds fun but trust me, it gets tiring very fast. Usually I would never get to pick the tree because my mom insisted she was the best at picking trees, so I would end up standing in the cold for hours waiting for my mom to pick a tree. Well this year things got more interesting because it ended up being 30 degrees, and Jane offered to help pick out the tree. That was a bad idea. We ended up walking around the entire farm four times.
I was now following Jane around the farm for the fifth time with Delilah in my arms. My mom wasn't with us because she was using the bathroom. There was every size of tree imaginable surrounding us. It was pretty cool, but that didn't distract me from the fact it felt like my fingers were about to freeze off.
"How tall was the tree last year?" Jane asked while observing a tree double her height.
"Nowhere near as tall as that one." I snickered. Delilah reached out her little hand to touch the tree and yelled at me when she realized I wasn't holding her close enough to the tree for her to touch it. "My apologies madam." I apologized jokingly as I stepped closer to the tree. She hit the tree a few times and looked at me for a reaction. Am I supposed to laugh? Am I supposed to hit the tree too? I forced a laugh resulting in her giving me a happy look and hitting the tree again.
"I think she likes this one." Jane stepped closer to us and grinned at Delilah. The baby began screeching random sounds at the tree as she continued hitting it.
"I couldn't have said it better." I nodded in agreement to Delilah's inhumane noises. Jane giggled and held up the polaroid camera that hung around her neck so that she could take a picture of the wholesome moment. I smiled at the camera and watched as Jane clicked the camera's button. She held the camera still for a couple seconds before the picture slid out of the top. Jane hurriedly put it in her pocket so it could develop properly. (Polaroids develop the best when they're in the dark)
"That picture is going to be so cuteeee." Jane smiled excitedly. I returned her smile and leaned over to place a peck on her cheek.
"You know, sometimes I pretend we're a married couple when we are alone with Delilah." I admitted.
Jane cocked an eyebrow and smirked slightly, "This is a sign. We need to get married and have a baby right now."
"Not yet." I snickered, remembering this conversation happening many times before.
"But why not? Give me a valid reason this time!" She whined.
"First of all, we are in high school. Second of all, we don't have jobs. And third of all, we have no money." I listed off all of the most important reasons even though I knew she wouldn't care about them.
"But imagine waking up to a baby and my face every morning." She grinned at me, completely ignoring everything I just said.
"Jane. Let's enjoy being young and in love before we sell our souls to an infant please." I joked.
She rolled her eyes jokingly and crossed her arms, "Fine."
"I swear if my mom doesn't come back soon I'm picking a tree without her." I complained. I could tell Delilah was getting bored because she wasn't interested in the tree anymore.
"She's been gone for like thirty minutes." Jane pointed out.
"That's just how she is. She probably met another mom in the bathroom or something." I shrugged, "But I am gonna get frostbite if I don't get out of here soon."
"Honestly I think we should just buy this tree, it's Delilah approved and everything." Jane chuckled. On cue, my mom walked over to us with three hot chocolates.
"Mom!" I exclaimed with annoyance, "You risked my life for hot chocolate??"
She pretended to look offended, "Well my bad for wanting to do something nice."
"No offense Susan, but you took so long our fingers turned purple." Jane held up her hands so that my mom could see. My moms eyes widened.
"Well there was this really nice lady at the hot chocolate stand and she was buying hot chocolate for her daughter too so we bonded over that." My mom explained, as if that would make me any less mad at her.
"Can we just take this one home?" I asked desperately, just wanting to leave.
"Will it fit in the house?.." She questioned.
"Maybe." I shrugged.
She stared up at the giant tree for a few moments, deep in thought. She was being so overdramatic about it. Bitch, it's a tree.
"Alright, we can get it." She sighed with a smile. The kind of smile the mom in every family movie gives her kids after she agrees to let them get something ridiculous that they begged for. It's hard to explain but it made me want to cringe.
