Seeing a loved one in a coma is possibly the worst feeling. Their family know that they're alive, but the fact that they can't move, speak or even open their eyes is heart-breaking.

Damon was broken. He was watching as the love of his life was laying on the couch, barely hanging on. Every second that she was in a coma, Damon was angry. He should have forced Jeremy to kill Klaus. He should have roped Jeremy into ending Klaus' torment. At least Elena wouldn't be stuck in a coma that she might not ever come out of.

"Damon, go to bed. Elena will be okay." Caroline tried to convince him, but he wasn't going to move.

"No. I'm going to make Elena's coma a little more bearable." Damon held Elena's hand, closing his eyes.

Damon watched as Elena sat up in his bed, her eyes trying to stay open.

"Damon?" Elena asked as she looked at him, his eyes immediately gluing to her eyes.

"Hey, Elena." Damon smiled, seeing his girlfriend smile again.

"My ring. Where is my ring?" Elena panicked when she looked down, seeing that her daylight ring was gone.

"It's okay, Elena." Damon reassured her. Elena stood up, carefully walking toward her boyfriend. When she walked toward the light, she was shocked, yet happy that she didn't burn up. She ran over to Damon, her arms wrapping around him, her lips landing on his.

"Is this a dream?" Elena asked, confused.

"The dream that you always thought of. As Cinderella once said, a dream is a wish your heart makes. You've always dreamed about not being a vampire. You've dreamed of walking in the sunlight without wanting to worry about a ring. You've dreamt of being free." Damon kissed Elena back.

"What's happening to me? Why is this happening? Why can't I wake up?" Elena asked.

"You killed Klaus, and because you did, you died too. Bonnie barely saved you." Damon admitted the truth.

"Well, if I'm stuck here, please make sure Jeremy is okay?" Elena asked, looking into Damon's eyes.

"Sure. Whatever you want." Damon kissed Elena one more time.

Letting go of her hands, Damon opened his eyes.

"Is she okay?" Caroline asked, smiling.

"She's more than okay. If you want, you can see her?" Damon offered, Caroline not hesitating to nod.

Caroline knelt down next to Elena. She smiled as she held Elena's hand, her eyes closing.

"We're graduating next year. I can't believe it." Elena smiled as she and Caroline walked through town square.

"We are. It's crazy. One moment we're learning that Bonnie is a witch and the next moment we're on the cusp of graduating high-school." Caroline walked alongside Elena.

"Caroline, can you promise me something?" Elena asked, looking at her best friend.

"Anything." Caroline smiled, wondering what Elena would want her to promise.

"Can you promise me that whatever happens next, you'll look after Damon, Stefan and Jeremy?" Elena asked, holding Caroline's hand.

"Of course, Elena. I'll make sure that Jeremy stays off the drugs and alcohol. I'll make sure that Damon doesn't go on any more killing sprees. I'll also make sure that Stefan doesn't get too hooked on human blood." Caroline laughed, Elena chuckling.

"Whatever it takes." Elena hugged her best friend.

"I'll miss you, Caroline." Elena whispered.

"I'll miss you more, Elena." Caroline whispered back.

When Caroline let go of Elena's hand, she couldn't help but cry. Her best friend was in a coma and there was nothing she could do to help bring her out of it.

"Everything will be okay. Elena will be okay." Damon was now comforting Caroline, who had fully broken down, unable to stop crying. Caroline wondered if there was anything she could've done to change Elena's fate. Elena never deserved to be in a coma, yet here she was, laying on a very comfortable couch, her eyes basically glued shut. She couldn't open them, no matter how hard she tried.

For Elena, the coma was infuriating. She could hear everything that Damon and Caroline were saying, yet it was impossible for her to open her eyes, speak or even twitch her fingers. Elena felt like she had sleep paralysis. She was completely awake, but her body was paralysed. She couldn't move. Feeling Damon or Caroline hold her hand was nice. She felt connected to them and when they gave her something to dream about, she felt loved. But, all she wished for was the ability to open her eyes or say something to let her friends and family know that she was okay or that she was going to get out of the coma.
