Visiting Damon's grave was hard for her, even a year later. She couldn't even look at the casket without a tear spilling down her cheek. Sitting near the casket, Elena looked up at the ceiling, the crypt walls dusty and covered in cobwebs.

"I lied to you, Damon. I'm so sorry." Elena started crying. Her knees were against her chest as she buried her head, unable to stop the tears. Feeling something across her face, she looked up, sad when she realised that it must have been the wind.

"Even if I wanted to accept your apology, you wouldn't be able to hear me...so I won't." Damon sighed, feeling devastated that Elena was so unhappy with herself.

"Please don't leave me, Damon. You have a daughter- we have a daughter. You're my husband. You were never supposed to die like this! You were supposed to grow old with me and die in your sleep." Elena's tears kept coming.

"Well, technically, I did die of old age." Damon laughed, immediately stopping when he realised that Elena couldn't hear him.

"But I don't have a choice baby. You are, by far, the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my 173 years on this Earth. The fact that I got to die knowing that I was loved, not just by anyone, but you, Elena Salvatore. It's the epitome of a fulfilled life. It's never going to get any better than this. I mean, we have a daughter! I never imagined myself having a child, let alone a beautiful daughter. I'm sorry that our marriage was short, but at least we're married. I will never be able to thank you enough for giving me the most wonderful life, Elena. You are more than the love of my life, you're more than my wife and the mother of my child. You are the one who saved me." Damon wiped the tears from Elena's face, watching as she continued to cry.

"I love you, Elena. I love Danielle. I will always be watching over you both, no matter what." Damon spoke, seeing Elena stop crying.

"Please...please...come back to me, Damon!" Elena cried again.

"Goodbye my love." Damon spoke, disappearing into thin air.

Elena felt like she had just stopped crying for the first time in years. Not wanting to be near Damon's casket, Elena stood up, racing outside. She sat near one of the trees that had been planted around the time that Damon became a vampire. Pulling out her diary, she clicked her pen and put it onto the page, nervous to write. She feared that every single emotion would appear at once.

Dear Diary,

Almost a year ago, I lost the love of my life, my husband, my soulmate, my best friend.

Damon meant the world to me. Even when he did the most unspeakable actions, I never gave up on him.

I must admit that the moment we met, even though he compelled me to forget, I knew that I loved him.

He was mysterious, dangerous, adventurous. He was everything that I wanted to be and more.

Although I loved Stefan, I truly loved Damon, and I think that we were truly soulmates.

We managed to tough it out and continue our relationship, even when I was in a coma.

But, there is something I need to confess. Something that has haunted me since the day he died.

Before Stefan stabbed Katherine with a stake in the heart, she told me something.

She told me that because Damon had been a vampire for over 145 years, time would catch up to him now that he was human.

Instead of telling Damon, meaning he could do everything he had ever wanted to do before he died, I kept it from him.

I told him that I was pregnant, and that was that. I never had the guts to reveal his fate to him.

I was heartbroken that he missed the Danielle's birth. I felt like it was all my fault that he never got to hold her.

If only I had told him what Katherine had told me. Maybe things would have been different. Maybe his life would have been more fulfilled. Overall, Damon was my everything.

In fact, he was the one who saved me.

A crow swooped down, sitting next to Elena as she put her diary away. Smiling, she stood up to see Stefan holding Danielle.

"You wrote it, didn't you?" Stefan asked, Elena sighing.

"Yes. I needed to get it over with." Elena smiled.

"Leave it here. That way Damon will see it." Stefan suggested. Hesitant, Elena gently ripped the page from her diary, folding it up before placing it inside of Damon's casket, seeing his body for the first time in nearly a year.

Returning to Stefan, Elena took Danielle, trying to be happy for her one-year-old daughter. Looking behind her, she saw Damon, a smile plastered on his face. He waved, his wedding ring shining in the sunlight. Elena blinked, unsure if her imagination was playing tricks on her. When she opened her eyes, Damon was gone. Her face dropping slightly, Elena looked down at her left ring finger, seeing her engagement ring and her wedding ring. Her wedding ring shone in the sunlight exactly like Damon's did.

Smiling, Elena walked off with Stefan and Danielle, Caroline meeting up with them on her way to work.
