"Hang on, 3 hours ago you wouldn't sit with him, and now you're off out?" I asked, my eyes flicking between Maya and Luke.
"Pretty much," she said, "It's important!"
"Go on then, have fun,"
She left behind Luke, and shut the door with quite some force; Cal raised his eyebrows then shrugged and put his feet up on the coffee table.
"She confuses me,"
"She's a teenager,"
"I guess so," I hummed, "Can't quite grasp the fact she's living here,"
"Sorry I kinda sprung it on you,"
"It wasn't you, it was my mum and dad,"
"Still not spoken to them?"
"Don't think I ever will... can you promise me something?"
"Yeah,"
"Be patient with her. I know she seems a little cold, and I am sure in the next few days we will receive some grief, but I know she's just scared,"
"Of course mate, I get that,"
"And be nice to her. I think she needs people to be nice to her... and be nice to her if we have ever had one of those stupid sibling fight, she's so... she used to be so confident and bubbly,"
"She's gonna be okay," he said, wrapping his arm round my shoulder, "I know she has her guard up, but somewhere deep down she's still that little sister you knew,"
"She really believes she's like what they said. I know she's my sister but I just want to look after her,"
"Of course you do, she's your baby sister. Proper baby, there's 15 years between you,"
"I guess so,"
"It might take some time though, to reverse it. Kinda gotta rewire her whole self image,"
"I really hope she's not pregnant,"
"She won't be, she's stressed, but she's not pregnant in my opinion... I think her mental health has taken a toll on her, but I do also think that will improve,"
"It better,"
"We need to give her time, and a lot of love. At least you're good to be around,"
"Gee, thanks,"
"I'm just saying! She'll probably wanna spend time with you,"
I smiled at that thought.
Perhaps I had missed her more than I knew, and the feeling of being a big brother. I never stopped caring about her, but admittedly, she wasn't on my mind as much when she was away, and I had work.I'd always done my best to keep in touch with her, but it was usually one sided. At the time I thought she hated me, but now I knew it was more complicated than that.
"Are you okay though? I know you haven't been too fond of your parents the last few years, but it's a lot to cut them off,"
"Yeah... I don't wanna give them my time if they're gonna treat Maya this way. She's nothing like what they think,"
"Talk to me if it get's a bit too much,"
"I will, thanks Cal,"
"I wonder what she's got Luke doing for her,"
"No clue, hopefully she has a nice time though, they used to be like best friends," I hummed.
"Yeah, I feel like we can't really expect her to be the same though. She liked the attention when she was younger, and it's different forming relationships with people as a teenager,"

FanfictionParents always say they don't have favourites. Well, most of the time anyway. In some situations it was painfully obvious, like in Maya's. As the youngest, there were high expectations. Even higher when your brother is a doctor, and you're well...
