Michael
"Evening,"
"Fuck me,"
"Bit forward,"
"Is my hair okay?"
"Cal, your hair is that short it literally can't go wrong. You look great," I said, downing the last of my coffee, "Separate cars?"
"Please drive me,"
"Fine, I finish at 10,"
"Me too. Why the fuck do they do this to us?"
"Someone's gotta,"
"Meet you in the car?"
"Gimme a sec," I said, rushing to Maya's door, "Knock knock,"
"Who's there?"
"Michael,"
"Michael who?"
"Michael wants to give you a hug goodbye?"
The door swung open and she threw her arms round me tightly, her book still in her hand, then I kissed her cheek and let go.
"Would you like Ash to stay tonight?"
"Yes please,"
"Alright. Sleep well,"
"Do you have to work?"
"If you want more books then yes,"
She hugged me again, this time a little less energetic, then climbed back in bed so I let her be.
Cal was very happy I gave him a ride, but I didn't mind because he'd spent more time in than out of the hospital lately. Plus, by the time we arrived his coffee had kicked in and he was in a good mood.
When we got there, we split off, and I set up my computer. I was just doing waiting room emergencies today, so I was pretty okay with that. It was a Saturday, so busy, but I hoped it wouldn't be too bad because I was assigned to attend to all the kids. It was sad, but didn't usually involve drunken swearing, or any shouting.
My first job was a cast anyway, so they'd be pretty happy to be closer to going home.
"Number 139?"
We liked to do it by numbers because it was way easier, and more anonymous, than names. Or at least I liked it better.
A mum and son walked towards me, and I held the door for them, then out down a step so he could get on the bed.
"I am Dr Michael, what's your name?"
"Archer,"
"Nice to meet you. I am sure you've had to see a lot of different people today, huh?" I asked, watching his eyes darting round, "I'm the last one today, I promise,"
"Do I get a cast?"
"You do! What colour would you like?"
"Blue,"
"Awesome. I'm just gonna take a look at your x-ray, then we can get your sorted,"
"I fell over at football,"
"Oh no! I can see you have a small break. It should heal perfectly, then you'll be back on the pitch again. Is it a team?"
"No,"
"He tagged along with his older brother... we've been here a while,"
"I'm sorry about the wait. I'm just gonna take the sling off you, bud, then I need you to lay your arm down on this side,"
