Maya

There definitely was such thing.

It was 5am, and my throat felt like knives. I guess I'd been feeling a bit grotty for a couple of days, but I didn't think I was getting it.

He jinxed it.

Quietly, I went upstairs to the medicine cabinet and got painkillers, taking them with water from the tap. I'd been on top of my vitamins, I had tried to eat, I was finally sleeping well.

And I still got sick.

I guessed good things weren't meant to last with me.

I wiped a couple of tears- sore throats fucking sucked- then went to the kitchen and got an ice lolly, taking it back to my room. This wasn't the worst time to be awake, and I was still going to school of course, but it definitely sucked.

Once the painkillers kicked in, I managed to sleep for a bit again, but still woke up before Michael woke me up. I changed into my uniform, then put my hair up out of my face, and went back upstairs to stash some painkillers for the day.

"Morning," Calum said, grabbing his toothbrush, "What are you up to?"

"Nothing,"

He opened my hand and picked up the painkillers to look, then passed back one tray of them, and put the rest back in the cupboard.

"You're sick?"

"No. I um, I have cramps,"

"Your period started again? That's good!"

"No,"

"Oh?"

"I don't have cramps,"

"Maya, if you're feeling sick then you're not in trouble,"

"I'm fine. I just have a headache,"

"Okay... are you well enough for school?" he asked, feeling my head, then my cheek, "You have a temperature,"

I gulped, which hurt like a bitch, then he sighed and shut the cupboard.

"Your throat hurts,"

"No,"

"Yes it does," he said, grabbing a tissue to dry the single tear dramatically rolling down my cheek, "Are your tonsils swollen?"

"I dunno,"

"Let me look,"

"No. I wanna go to school,"

"Well if it's not tonsillitis then maybe you can,"

"I don't wanna go to the doctors,"

"Let me take a look, you're crying, it hurts,"

"You're not getting paid,"

"Maya. Let me see if you need to get proper medicine or not,"

I huffed, and let him, scowling at him when he stood back up.

"Hmm. It looks okay for now,"

"Told you,"

I went downstairs and made porridge for myself, just as Michael came to wake me up.

"You're up early!"

"She has a sore throat!" Calum called down, "Don't let her fool you,"

"Oh darling, I'm sorry. Do you have painkillers?"

"Mhm,"

"Would you like the day off school? Do you feel okay?"

"I'm going,"
