Maya
"Your stomach is rumbling so loudly," Finn whispered, "I have snacks,"
"It's fine,"
"You didn't buy lunch,"
"No one gave me lunch money,"
"Oh. I'll make you food when we get to yours,"
"I can make my own food,"
"Yeah but it's a favour,"
"Psssst, are you two talking about English?" Miss said, rolling her chair over, "How are you getting on?"
"Sorry,"
"We're done," Finn said.
"It's double sided,"
"Oh,"
"I reckon you can wrap this up in 15 minutes. Can you stay behind for a few minutes, Maya, or do you have to rush off?"
"Am I in trouble? I'm sorry we were talking,"
"You're not in trouble,"
"I'm really sorry,"
"Maya, you're not in trouble, for anything. I was making sure you guys did at least a bit of work. I just wanna catch up,"
She rolled away and I looked at Finn; he gave me a soft smile, and then a side hug, before we both went through the rest of the sheet.
After the lesson, he waited outside for me, and miss shut off the computer, pulling out my essay from a stack of papers.
"You look scared,"
"I am,"
"You're not in trouble, I promise,"
"Okay. I used to get in a lot of trouble that's all,"
"You're definitely not a trouble maker in my class for sure. I just wanted to have a quick word with you about the essay,"
"Okay,"
"I'm handing out the marks tomorrow, but yours doesn't have a mark and I don't want you to be all freaked out. It's really good, Maya,"
"Okay,"
"If the essay carried on with this much strength, you'd be looking at, at least a B. Starting things of with a B is really good,"
"Why don't I get a mark?"
"Well, it's pretty incomplete, so I didn't feel like I could mark it properly. I'll be giving lots of feedback and help tomorrow, so that will help you out,"
"I'm confused about why you're telling me,"
"Because I am very impressed,"
"So I am not a trouble maker and you are impressed?"
"Yes... I was hoping to have your permission to email Michael to tell him that I am impressed,"
"I can just tell him,"
"You can, but I thought it might feel a bit more special,"
"Please can I tell him?"
"Of course. I'll see you tomorrow, have a good rest of your day,"
I slung my bag over my shoulder and left the room, meeting Finn across the hall. Ellen couldn't come, so it was just us two.
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah. Thanks for coming over,"
"Thanks for inviting me,"
"I'm kinda nervous about being in the house alone,"
