Demi's camp getaway

Chapter 22

Boy drama

We were all still sitting down eating our snack when a group of maybe 30 kids walked down the trial and I watched as Nick and Demi walked over to greet them, they were talking for a bit before I noticed the boys and girls splitting up just like we had done when we got here. 

After about half an hour everyone including the new group had settled and had something to eat. A guy, who I'm guessing was the other camps leader stood up with a megaphone and starting talking to everyone "hey everyone! For those who don't know me My name is Ben, and this is Nancy" he said gesturing to a tall girl with a high pony tail behind him. "And over here is Nick and Demi, I hope you guys don't mind the sound of my voice because it's my megaphone so I'll be doing most of the announcements" he smiled. I saw the other camps leaders roll their eyes and we all chuckled a bit. I liked Ben already, he seemed like he had a good sense of humour. "So! Our first activity here, we'll be spilling up into 2 groups! 1 will be doing paddle boarding and 1 will be helping collect wood for the bon fire then we will alternate. We will be mixing you guys up so you will get a chance to know each other!" Ben said.  I saw the 4 of the camp leaders talking then Nancy and Demi started to spilt us up into 2 groups.
I got put into group number 1 and was with Jess, Joel and Tyler. We looked over at Maddi, Ava, and Ryan and made a funny face.
"Okay I need 2 volunteers! 1 from each group!" Ben shouted into the megaphone "yes you! Boy with the curly black hair in the white Nike top!" He said pointing to Joel "and you! Vivian, from my camp, both of you come on up"
They both walked up and stood in front of him "okay, your both going to play rock, paper, scissors and the winner gets to pick what their group does first. Okay? Ready?" He said. "Rock, paper, scissors" Vivian and Joel said at the same time. Joel chose rock and Vivian chose paper. Group 2 cheered while Vivian covered covered Joel's hand to symbolise her win. "Okay Vivian what do you chose!" Ben said putting the megaphone in front of her mouth "paddle boarding obviously!" She cheered "whhooo!" Her group called out "that's okay. We'll get all the good sticks first so you guys can eat" Joel said then walked off smirking followed by a bunch of "ooooooooo's" from the crowd. "Nice try dude" Tyler playfully punched Joel.

We were strolling around in the forest collecting sticks we thought would be good and bringing them back to the beach and chucking them in the pile.  "Oh hey Demi" I turned around to see Tyler greeting Demi "hey guys, found any good sticks?" She asked "yeh we're making Joel carry them all" Jess laughed "I can see" Demi laughed. "Why do we have to collect sticks" I groaned "because 4 adults can't keep an eye on 60 kids in the ocean paddle boarding at once and we don't even have that many paddle boards, and it's easier and quicker if everyone chips in" Demi smiled. "Oh that is a good point" I said "are we gonna roast marshmallows?!" Jess asked excitedly "yes we are! And tomorrow, we're making dampers" Demi said so excitedly which made me smile a bit "what're dampers?" Tyler said pulling a face. "It's kinda like a crispy bakery treat, we put jam and cream on it" Demi explained "oooo that sounds good" Jess said licking her lips "it is" Demi chuckled "anyway. Hayley can I talk to you for a sec?" She asked. I was about to be rude but then I remembered Kirra and decided not to be "sure Demi" I smiled "I'll be right back guys"  we walked away from everyone else and started heading towards the tents "I just wanted to ask" she paused then looked at me "have you, been behaving?" She asked "behaving?" I said lifting one of my eyebrows "I mean. Have you been staying in camp? Not getting into trouble or doing anything you know-" "no Demi, I haven't done anything" I cut her off. She nodded her head and looked down at her feet "okay good, I'm glad" she smiled then reached into her pocket and pulled out a packet of smokes "like I promised" she said handing it to me. "Oh, Demi thank you" "you hadn't asked for any and I was worried you were going to-" she looked at me and paused then looked at the ground and took a deep breath "it's okay Demi" I sighed. She looked up at me "I just don't want you doing anything that will put you in danger... Not while I'm around" she smiled lovingly at me. "But. I do wish you would quit, I'm not happy about it. But I'll get them for you if it means you won't do anything silly" she said. I took a deep breath then looked up at her and smiled. "Thank you Demi" I smiled then started walking back. "Demi?" I turned around "yes?" I thought about what I was going to say for a minute. "Do you.. have.. favourites? Like at camp?" I asked nervously "I don't have favourites Hunny. some of the kids that come to my camp have been through a lot. This is meant to be a safe place for everyone to get away. A retreat, in saying that, some kids need and want more attention then others, but everyone is equal, why?" She responded. I looked at my feet. Oh so I wasn't a favourite, I didn't mean anything to her. "Just wondering" I gave her a fake smile and headed back to the beach just in time as everyone was swapping over activities.
