Chapter 27

*2 months later*

*Kakashi's POV*

Megumi was dying when I saw her in the battlefield 2 months ago. The doctors at Sunagakure revived her for 15 minutes. It took a month before her vital signs returned back to normal and we were able to transfer her to Konoha hospital.

Today is her 20th birthday and she is still unconscious. I brought a bouquet of white tulips and put them in a vase on the bedside table. I also put the framed photo of us when were were still kids. She forgot to take this when she left my apartment.

A few moments later, I heard somebody opened the door. It was Mitsuki and his wife. He just got married a few months back and they are expecting.

"Kakashi. I did not expect you to be here." He said in a flat voice and added, "This is my wife, Ayame." I gave them a smile.

"Nice to meet you, Ayame. I'm Kakashi. It's nice to see you too, Mitsuki. I have —— " Just when I was about to say something, Mitsuki cut me off.

"Is she dying?" He asked with his arms crossed.

"She is in stable condition. It seems like you still have some bad blood with her." I said while looking at him seriously.

"Megumi is a heartless monster. She have killed hundreds of innocent people, Kakashi."He said and added, "Isn't that why you broke up with her?!" He smiled sarcastically.

I sighed and tried the best as I can not to punch him in front of his pregnant wife. Insted, I smiled back and said, "If you think of her that way, then why did you even come here?"

"I wanted to make sure that she is dead. Let's go, Ayame." He said flatly and they immediately left.

I looked at Megumi, held her hand in mine, and took a deep breath.

*Megumi's POV*

I woke up with a throbbing headache. I felt that my eyes are covered in bandages.

How am I still alive?

I took out the bandages that were covering my eyes. When I opened them, I still couldn't see well. My eyesight is still blurry but manageable. I sat up and removed all the things on my body. When I looked to the right, I saw a bouquet of tulips and what's this?

I picked it up and put it closer to my chest. I couldn't help but cry. I wish I have died that time. Living here on Earth is just too painful.

I stood up, I held the frame close to me, and tried to walk. My legs seemed like they forgot how to move.

I slowly walked towards the huge windows and looked down. I am just at the 2nd level. It will be easy to sneak out. I opened the window and jumped to one of the roofs.

I ran as fast as I could in my white hospital gown, not looking back.

*Kakashi's POV*

When I was about to drift off to sleep, I heard a knock on the door. It was an anbu.

"The Third Hokage would like to ask for your help in locating Yuki Megumi's whereabouts. She has been missing for half an hour now and we have all been looking for her. You might know some information."

"I don't know where she might be. I will help with the search." I said and immediately changed to my anbu uniform.

*Megumi's POV*

I dropped by Minato sensei's grave and sobbed. I feel worthless. They said that I am the best kunoichi but in fact, I am nothing without my ice release.

I hate myself for choosing my missions instead of the people that I love... But I just wanted to keep them safe.

Where did I go wrong?

I gave peace for the village but it made my life miserable in return.

I have lost all the motivation to live.

I am alone and nobody cares about me.

I left Minato sensei's grave and let my feet lead the way to nowhere. I just don't care anymore.

After an hour of walking, I saw myself standing on a cliff. When I looked down, it was a river with huge rocks.

It wouldn't hurt to jump and die. Living is more painful than dying anyway.

I closed my eyes, hugged the frame tighter and let my body fall forward.

I felt somebody grab my elbow and pulled me hard into a hug.

*Kakashi's POV*

Tears fell down my eyes as I enveloped her in a tight hug. I stroked her head against my chest and kept silent for a while.

"Don't do this please." I said softly as I kissed her forehead.

She let go of the hug and pushed me with a little strength coming out from her frail body.

Her eyes grew bigger when she saw my face and dropped the frame in her hands, causing it to shatter into the ground.

She dropped to her knees and started to cough up blood. It took her a moment before she could speak.

"Leave me alone, Kakashi. Just like what you did in the past few years. It is not so hard to do, isn't it?" She said softly and smiled weakly. She looked at her hands and added, "My body and my eyes are failing. I will be of no use for the village anymore."

I took her hands and held them in mine.

"I still love you. I tried to forget but I couldn't stop thinking about you every single day!" I told her and it came out louder than I expected.

She looked at our hands and looked into my eyes.

"I have always loved you, Kakashi... And always will." She said with a sad smile before losing consciousness.

The doctors have tied Megumi onto the bedframe so she won't be able to escape. The doctors have told me about her failing eyesight and that she will be completely blind in a matter of months. When that happens, she won't be able to use her ice release anymore.

I almost lost her today and I even forgot to greet her a happy birthday...
