Chapter 32

*Kakashi's POV*

Megumi have finally stopped crying but she wouldn't speak. I've been sitting on the bed with her for hours now, with her head on my chest, and with my arms around her.

"Megu, it's time for dinner." I told her but she shook her head.

"I'm not hungry at all." There was sadness in her voice.

"I know. But you should not skip your meals. You are still having a fever."

I felt her clench her fist on top of my abdomen and softly sobbed again.

"Ka-kashi... I want to keep this village at peace but most of the time, I wanted to quit being a ninja... I'm going insane." she said softly in between the sobs.

"Don't say things that you don't mean just because you are sad. You are the best kunoichi in Konoha. You have saved a lot of lives and have greatly helped in keeping the peace in our village."

"I have killed a lot of people. Hundreds, no, thousands... Including innocent children, pregnant women... Elderly... All that for peace! But the killing just wouldn't end. How will I atone for my sins, Kakashi?"

"Megu... I am a shinobi too and I understand how you feel... You have to be strong. You have me. You can tell me anything to make you feel better, ok?" She sat up, held my hands and looked at me in the eyes.

"Thank you, Kakashi."

She looked away and we both went to the kitchen to prepare and have our simple dinner. She spent the rest of the night staring blankly at the ceiling before drifting off to sleep.

*Megumi's POV*

Today is the day.

I had a meeting with Lord Danzo in the morning and it lasted for 5 hours. He was very detailed in informing me on what I need and I don't need to do. For lunch, I went to Ichiraku to eat and dropped by the dango shop for some dessert.

I went to Minato sensei's grave to pass the time. I cannot believe Itachi's future will have to be destroyed just to keep the village safe. Itachi is a fine shinobi, very matured for his age, and has a high potential in being a Hokage someday.

It was almost sunset when I left Minato sensei's grave. I was on my way to the park when I bumped into Kakashi... He saw my gaze and gave me a one-eyed smile.

"On your way home?" He asked as he put both of his hands in his pockets.

"I'm afraid not... Please have your dinner without me. I'll see you later." I used transportation jutsu to one of the trees in the Uchiha compound, as I didn't want to have a conversation with anyone right now... Not even Kakashi...

I felt bad but I had to focus on my mission. It has to be done. I put on my anbu mask and waited.

A few hours later, the atmosphere in the compound changed. I felt a presence beside me.

"Yuki Megumi. How have you been?"

When I looked up, It was a person in a black cloack weaking an orange mask.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"A friend of Itachi's. I believe that you are here to witness what's about to happen. I do not wish to waste more time. I'll see you again."

And with that he slowly disappeared inside the mask's only hole.

After a few minutes, the killings have started. I did not leave the place where I was sitting. I watched it all happen.

I felt numb.

It has to be done for the village.

I heard Sasuke's screams when he saw how his parents were killed by his elder brother.

I saw how Sasuke tripped and ran after Itachi.

When Sasuke finally lost consciousness, I appeared before Itachi. He was in tears.

"Uchiha Itachi. You have completed your mission." I said in a cold tone.

"Megumi senpai... Thank you. Please look after Sasuke... and keep the village safe." and with that, he quickly disappeared.

I picked up Sasuke in my arms and sent him to the hospital. I then reported to Lord Danzo about the completion of Itachi's mission.

"Well done. I expect nothing less from Uchiha Itachi. Konoha is at peace again. Yuki Megumi, you are to start your new mission right now. I do not want Kakashi to suspect that you were at the Uchiha massacre. You are to go to the Sand village to help their shinobis fight an infiltrator. You may go."

*1 year later*
*Kakashi's POV*

I was told to leave the anbu after the Uchiha massacre. I am now a jounin and is expected to train some genins. However, choosing students are tough these days. They have to pass my "bell" exam to become my students.

I have not seen Megumi for a year now. She was sent to an emergency mission to the sand village and have not come back yet. Lord Danzo assured me that she is fine and is just very busy.

We exchange letters but of course, that is not enough...

As I walk through the woods while reading my Icha Icha paradise, waiting for trainees, I felt that the bells are gone from my pants. I looked around but nobody's here. I looked up to one of the trees and saw her. She removed her anbu fox mask and said.

"Looking for these?" Megumi said smirking.

She jumped from the tree, pulled down my mask, and gave me a smooch.

"I missed you." She smiled.

"I did not expect to see you here, Megumi. My trainees are coming soon. Shall we continue later at home?"

She giggled "I'm sorry but I need to report to Lord Danzo. I'm not sure how long it will take."

She was still part of the Foundation and still the top kunoichi of Konoha. I'm happy to see her smiling for the first time after a year.

"Not a problem at all. I'll be waiting." I gave her a one-eyed smile and she left. I continued to read my Icha Icha paradise and realized that I was in the wrong training ground.

Great. I am late again.
