I shook my head as she started talking with the girls, them all still side eying us and complimenting her outfit.
"they are going to miss her" ember frowned and looked over to her team, seeing the coach was now talking to her.
"dont say anything to your team or to lily, but im going to surprise her and take her to the tournament" I turned to face her and she started smiling, her teeth being perfectly straight and white.
"really?" she glanced over at the team and saw how they where all getting along
"yeah" I nodded with a smile on my face, moving my attention from ember to the team and then back
"she hasn't lost her skills, shes still the best player" ember smiled widely at the team and then looked at me
"we-" I paused for a moment and thought about what to say, "exercise a lot" I finished my sentence and made it sound believable, I mean I wasn't lying, we do, but that's just sugar coating it on top of another sugar coat.
"I see" she nodded and pierced her lips again
I didn't know what to say so I inhaled and turned to watch lily enjoy her time with her friends
"look, if you can guarantee that you'll be there for all twelve of the games" she began which brought my attention back to her,
"I can pull some strings and get her in for at least half" she smiled with a hopeful look in her eyes, looking almost like she was begging me.
i looked back at her team, then at my family and saw techno staring at me with a piercing look in his eyes, very subtly shaking his head no.
"oh fuck me" i mumbled under my breathe and turned around to face ember again
"hm?" she started, acting like she missed something i said
"nothing, i just cant promise that we will be there" i flexed my neck slightly showing how i was genuinely sorry
"that's alright, lily has my number so if you guys are ever in Arizona, let me know and we can meet up" she smiled and gave my arm a squeeze, walking away towards her team
"that is seriously depressing" nick stared at her then at me with an unreadable look on his face
"yeah no shit" i turned around and held the bridge of my nose.
this mission was getting to me more than any other ever has, it was like i couldn't stop thinking about it. there is a chance that we could not make it out tonight and that's what put me on edge. yes, theres always a chance of dying on a mission but its different when your entire family is there, when your sister is there, when your fiancé is there, it was horrifying.
"how much longer do you think?" lily came up behind me and i felt her hand on my shoulder, ember and a couple of the girls from the team where behind her, Genevieve i know for sure.
"um, like fifteen minutes if we are lucky" i laughed and looked up to the front desk only to see wilbur was now arguing with the front desk guy for who knows what reason
"okay" she mumbled under her breathe, turning around to face Genevieve and ember once more
"hey phil said we have our own security, as in our own drivers and everything" nick practically squealed into my arm out of excitement
"why the hell do we need security" i turned to fully face him and he just looked at me deadpanned
"we literally are the security" i laughed, finishing my own sentence before he could respond.
"because they make us look cool" he squinted his eyes at me, then back down to his phone
"nick look at us" i scoffed and gestured towards everyone who dressed like millionaires
