2. What A Day?

The last day of school is something we all look forward to when we are in school but as a parent, I dread the summer vacation. Why is it three fucking months? Keeping an eleven year old who misses their dad occupied is a hard job even harder when her friends are in a different country.

She jumps into the car and places a kiss on my cheek.

"How was your last day, baba?"

"It was okay."

"Did anything fun happen?"

"No, it was okay."

"How do you feel?"

"I am excited for summer vacation, we are still going to Bora Bora, right?" a chuckle escapes my lips

"Yes baba. In fact, if you can get packed by today, we can go tomorrow." she smiles before connecting her phone to the car.

When we got home, she immediately goes into her room, either to pack or talk to her friends. I packed my luggage yesterday, I did not want to stress myself today as I pack hers.

As I sit down on the dinning room table, I dial Sino's number

"Kamohelo?"

"Hey, you busy?"

"Was I just about to sleep? No." sarcasm dripping into my ear

"Good." she lets out a chuckle "I am coming soon."

"Really? When?"

"In about two months and a fortnight."

"This business of yours is taking you away from me!" she whines

"I am going to be spending a month in Norfolk so we will have fun dates and ice cream and all of that."

"So he is not coming?"

"He is working, I hate it so fucking much, wish I could burn the entire CIA down."

"Why don't you?"

"I would not know where to start, plus, they said in a few years he will be done."

"You believe them?"

"Not for a second but we have hope."

"Okay, babes. Tell me, how is she?"

"She misses him, the longer he is gone, the more she misses him."

"How about you?"

"I'm a wreck, some days I wish I could have him do this parenting thing for me because it is so much work to do alone, but I'm a survivor and I try not to think about it like that. Let's talk about something else, how are your puppies?"

"Thato got expelled from Doggi daycare because he does not play nice."

"What? So have you found another one?"

"Oh no, I am taking him to trainer before taking him to school again, the funny thing is, he never plays rough with Lady."

"Maybe because he knows thats his sister."

"I don't know, but this trainer said he can help him so hopefully its not money down the drain, uhm, Thando just texted me, she has a flat tire and she does not want to wait for the insurance company alone." laughter escapes from me

"Okay, babes. Tell Thando, I say hi."

"I will, talk soon and see you soon as well."

"Yeah, yeah. I love you."

"I love you too." she hangs up and I get up to prepare dinner.

Khanyi came from her room to play games on the big tv. While it is unsettling having her scream at weird intervals, it is her way of letting off steam and I do not want to get in the way of that.

When dinner is ready, I get her off the game and at the table.

"Tell me, how are you feeling about your holiday?"

"Uhm, I am excited to feed sharks and to go on a safari!" she says with food in her mouth.

"I know we are excited but let's swallow before talking, take as much time as you need to answer."

"Yes, Ma." I lend a smile to her and it brightens her face, while we eat, the door rattles and I gesture for Khanyi to go into her room while I grab the gun under the kitchen counter.

As the person walks into the door, I immediately place the gun on their chest and I am faced with my husband.

"Glad to see you are still fast on your feet."

"Khanyi, Dad is here!" I say before placing the gun back after putting it back on safety. He wraps his arms around me and allow myself to sink into him.

Stray tears run from my eyes gathering on his shirt, I hate that I missed him this much but this is the love of my life.

"Dad!" we pull apart and he embraces her within his arms, lifting her so he does not hunch over

"How is my fuchsjunges?" [Little fox]

"Ich habe dich vermisst!" [I missed you]

I take his bags into our bedroom and take a moment for myself. While I am excited that he is back, I am also shocked and it takes me a while to process it.

I hear them laughing, catching up downstairs and I cry my relief into my pillow. I am happy he seems to be back in one piece, I was worried he would be gone forever, never coming back to raise his child, coming back to be the phenomenal husband he is or coming back to be back. I was worried this job was going to take him forever but I was wrong! I am rarely wrong but on the instances where I am wrong, I am glad.

After a few moments, I head to the bathroom to rinse my face before making my way downstairs.
