We are in the house, drinking cocktails and gossiping, I missed having female companionship.
Kaiser is still at work, I was with him but I wanted to come home, manual labour is exhausting.
"He is a man of few words."
"It looked like he hated me."
"No, he did not. He does not say much nor smile, he is German." we share a laugh.
"Okay. Good news, I found a roommate and they are moving in two weeks from today."
"Congratulations once again."
"Thank you. We get along well and I hope it stays that way."
"Only one way to find out."
"How was university?"
"Why?"
"I am thinking of going."
"Really?"
"Yeah, it is not too late for me to do so."
"Well, I say go for it. It can be a wonderful experience."
"Won't they make fun of me for being old?"
"No, they won't, even if they do, you are there to enjoy learning."
"I am. What are you planning on doing next year?"
"We are building the boat to go see some sharks and whales."
"That sounds so cool, you are so cool."
"Thank you but it really is not that extraordinary, people do it all the time."
"Yeah, but you literally have a million and one things going on. I actually admire you."
"Do not make me cry."
"I think many of the women in our community are inspired by you, especially the younger ones. We were constantly told that all we could ever be, is wives and you come here and show us that we can be a million things at once and we do not need to be mothers."
"Being a mother is one of the best jobs you could ever have, trust me but that can not be all you do, we have so much to offer the world and kids are not the end all, be all."
"Exactly why we admire you. Your marriage is also inspiring the girls who want to get married but thought all they could look forward to was abuse and degradation."
"There are many good husbands in our community."
"But they would rather die than support their wife's dreams. Marriage is a place where great women go to die."
"Well, I am glad to have inspired you but I am not perfect."
"And that is great, no one is looking for perfection, merely excellence and eminence and you embody them perfectly."
"Now I might shed a few tears." we continue drinking and talking about her plans and all the places she would like to visit. She has her entire future in front of her and for the first time, she believes she can fetch her dreams.
She leaves shortly after my husband arrives, while he was more open, it was getting late and she needed to be home.
"What happens when we are gone?"
"What do you mean?"
"When we die, what becomes of the boathouse, the shelter, all the people we look after? What happens to the dogs?"
"What are you suggesting?"
"A trust for the community. A significant amount is going to our Godchildren but what is left, should come here for the children who want to go to university but also to keep the school in good shape,"
"Okay."
"So I can do it?"
"Yeah." covering his face in kisses evokes a giggle in him which pulls Daniel to snuggle into us while Juanita watches us from the door.
Over the past few months, we have earned her trust. She has allowed us to touch her, carry her, and feed her. We take walks daily and she no longer reacts harshly to other dogs barking at her.
She even gets along with Daniel and he has grown to be a big boy. I can no longer carry him but Kai is still able to. One thing I do enjoy is the walks we take with both dogs after work.
We had to stop working on the boat because they had to focus on repairing a few trawlers. Our boat is left with fixing the electricity and making sure the gutter system works perfectly.
We have already ordered the furniture and we will be furnishing the boat in a few weeks.
The furnishing will have to wait until we are done with the application season. The five students that have enrolled in our program have been applying to various universities around the globe. We needed not to limit ourselves. The world is our oyster.
They have applied to other bursaries but I will fund them if they need it. Isa is handling most of the application process, I just provide the money needed.
While we had planned to be on the water in a year but with all the delays we have had, we may only be able to be on the water in double the time.
"Come girl," I call Juanita and she walks towards me. I made her food and placed it in her kennel.
Kai has finished building them, their custom Kennels and they seem to love them. "Come boy!" Daniel runs into his home.
As I am watching TV, he walks in and as I take him in, I notice the bandage wrapped around his forearm.
"Hey, are you okay?"
"Yeah." wrapping my arms around him, he lets out a chuckle. "I am fine, Kitten."
"Okay, you can go wash your hands, I will make your whiskey and snacks and take it outside for you."
"I can do it."
"I want to do it." a smile and he heads towards the bathroom. Whenever he comes home hurt, my heart skips a beat, I am afraid, he will never come home. I know I am overthinking but I can not fathom living without him.
We sit outside watching our dogs play together. "I would like to take you out to dinner."
"When?"
"Tomorrow."
"Fancy or regular?"
"Fancy, in Havana."
"I can not wait." we continue watching the dogs "What would you like to do on your birthday?"
"Spend time with you."
"Yeah, but gifts, or something else."
"A smile from you is enough for me, Kätzchen." he takes a sip of whiskey and does not meet my gaze, I am glad he does not see me blushing.
"I will think of something."
"I know I will love it."
"Of course." Daniel makes his way toward us and he feeds him a treat.
