THE THREE OF us met in the quaint playground structure on the outskirts of our elementary school.

i stood on my tiptoes to see over the rim of the trashcan, throwing my empty juice into it and then leaning down to tug on the zipper of my cherry red jacket. it was just a few sizes too big. mom always told me i would grow into it eventually. being five years old was hard.

then, after a moment of standing by myself under the shade of a tree, my eyes flickered and fell upon katsuki and his group of friends.

lighting up, i quickly ran down the hill and to the sandbox where he stood, smiling upon finally finding someone i knew and could stand with. his group of friends weren't that friendly to me, though, always giving me strange looks; but katsuki wasn't friendly, either, and he still let me play four square with them.

"katsuki?" i said, walking up and tapping on his shoulder.

the blond glanced back and lightly shoved me off, before turning back to the small kid in front of him. the lanky boy had viridian-colored hair, a shade unlike anything i had seen before, tousled into messy curls that stood up on their own. freckles dusted all over his cheeks and nose, as well as his arms and knees.

the kid wore a plain orange shirt and forest green shorts, with special red sneakers that i'd seen tucked in the back of stores at the mall.

i blinked, finding the tears that gushed from his eyes upsetting. it reminded me of the way mom and my big brother cried, and i didn't like that. with a frown, i turned to katsuki.

my head tilted to the side, eyebrows furrowed in slight agitation. "what're you doing?"

"teaching this useless deku a lesson!" katsuki loudly replied, holding out his hands as sparks popped in his palms.

i shook my head, stepping around him and pushing his arms back to his chest. "stop, you're making him sad."

"he deserves it!" katsuki said, staring at me incredulously. "don't you get it, cherry head? he's quirkless!"

a moment of silence passed between us as i shot a glance back at deku from over my shoulder, before turning back to katsuki with an even more agitated frown. "i'll tell my mom you're picking on him, and she'll tell auntie."

"do it, snitch!" katsuki said.

his group of friends let out a chorus of laughter, all repeating katsuki's words like crows. the blond, however, didn't seem amused as he scoffed and turned around, pushing through the group and walking away.

i crossed my arms, glaring at the group of katsuki's friends as they glanced back at me.

they all made various rude gestures to me and followed after katsuki, their shoes sinking into the sand below and kicking it up behind them to send a cloud to our faces.
