— EMI SUZUKI'S WINE-red hair was quickly tied into a ponytail, one that immediately hung low as soon as her gentle hands had let go. the woman bounced around the kitchen with a youthful-like vigor, pots and pans flying around her like honeybees around a rose.
"mom, mom..." sam said hurriedly, scurrying forward and catching a panhandle. "you're gonna hurt yourself if you keep doing that."
emi blinked, and then smiled at her son. "ah, you're right! my hero!"
sam groaned at his mother's teasing sing-song voice.
"oh, come on, don't you wanna give your poor old mom a kiss on the cheek?" she said, her head tilted to the side as she very clearly enjoyed her son's embarrassed features.
"i'm too old for that, mom!"
"i'm sure all might kissed his mother's cheek when he was thirteen." emi huffed.
sam smiled before it faded to embarrassment once again as his mother swooped down and planted a kiss atop his head.
emi ruffled his hair. "gotcha!"
"momm..." he said exasperatedly, "i'm a teenager now! dad said i'm a man!"
"sure."
"momm!"
"now, come on, sit down!" emi insisted, "tell me about your day. how did you do on your math test?"
"i think i did pretty good," sam replied with a weak shrug.
"i'm proud of you." emi smiled and raised an eyebrow. "maybe you should tutor your baby sister. not doing well in math runs in the family, you know."
"mom, sydney's five. the only math she's doing is learning to count to ten." sam rolled his eyes.
his mother turned to him, hands placed on her hips as she tilted her head. "you didn't learn to count to ten until you were in the second grade."
"hey!"
"just the facts, honey."
sam groaned, sighing again, before he perked up and looked around the kitchen. "where is sydie?"
