— FOLLOWING NEW YEARS, class a was shoved back into the hero scene with the second round of work studies.
as scarlet wisps wrapped around the handle and pushed open the glass doors, a smile made way to lift my lips as i welcomed myself in my return to the busy atmosphere of my brother's hero agency.
my gaze immediately fell upon the curved receptionist's desk, occupied with workers, each of them busying themselves with their own lines of eager people waiting. wide screens lined the wall to my right, displaying the hero news channels from all over the country at a volume too low to be recognized over the buzz of conversation.
through tall doorways on either side of the entrance, sidekicks and employees rushed past each other in a traffic-like fashion. each were all too focused on their own tasks to exchange pleasantries, some holding files and others lugging massive cases of support items.
this flow of work had been carefully cultivated for years, one that was too stressful for most.
for me, however, it was like returning home.
the personal assistant to the number three hero was easily recognized as she crossed the glass bridge above, a path created as people skidded to the side and made way for her passing.
heels clicking with her confident strut, her impatience was shamelessly displayed as she pressed her phone to her ear, having a vigorous argument with the person she spoke to on the other side. one of her subordinates stumbled behind her and struggled to carry the heaping pile of files and binders in his arms.
"no, no, no!" amelia exclaimed, stepping onto the escalator and leaning against the railing.
she was much too focused on the phone call to notice she'd almost accidentally slapped her subordinate in the face.
"we agreed to quadrants five and six from three to seven p.m.; the only time i'd ever willingly request helios to cover more than twelve is if all for one himself were shoving my body into a meat grinder."
the words that flew from her lips were surprising, to say the least, especially coming from a woman who was professional and kind to a fault.
the person she was speaking to, however, made her irritated enough to use a colorful array of vulgar words from several languages. this caused the subordinate behind her to immediately whip around, eavesdropping even more obviously, before the heel of his shoe caught on an electric stair and tipped over the documents sitting on top of the pile.
following the pursuit of gravity, they soared down while the subordinate grabbed amelia's shoulders and turned her away in horror of imagining her anger directed at him for the mishap. scarlet energy danced around my fingertips as i held out my hand, dragging my suitcase behind me by the handle.
