- MY PHONE BUZZED the moment the clock turned five on saturday morning. screen lighting up as the sun slowly rose and shined through my curtain.

i reached out, pulling the curtain to the side and squinting as the sun met my eyes, before leaning forward and blowing the smoke outside.

sitting back down on the edge of my bed, i picked up my phone with one hand and held the cigarette to my lips with the other, gaze downturned as i opened the email sent from sir nighteye, followed by a text from togata that featured copious amounts of exclamation points and smiling emojis.

the smoke curls into the wind as i lean forward and blow it out the window again.

smoking had become a somewhat morning ritual following the nights where fear bled into my dreams and left me laying wide awake, but last night was one of the few where i wasn't able to get back into my slumber and dream of something happier.

in the haze of thoughts, i could distinctly remember the sound of a woman's voice, thin and brittle, speaking intelligible words. it was then followed by the honeyed voice of a man, the two having a strangely hazy conversation.

popping the cigarette into the glass of water on my bedside table, and finally shifted to hold my phone with both hands and type a response to the messages.

my finger pressed down on the power button as i threw my phone back onto my bed, sitting up and stepping forward to shut my window and draw the curtains back, shrouding my room in darkness again.

-

"-syd? syd!" izuku chimed, shaking my shoulder.

my heart skipped a beat as his voice cut through my sleep, turning away from him and pulling up the blanket to cover my face as he pushed back the curtain to let in the sun and make my room much brighter than before.

"come on, it's time to get up!" he smiled, reaching over and tugging on my blanket, but my grip on the hem was much too hard for him to pull it down. "syd, come... on...!"

with another loud groan, i waved my hand as scarlet energy danced around my fingers, drawing the curtain closed again.

izuku sighed. "syd."

"it's too early," i said, voice muffled by the covers.

"it's not too early." izuku sighed again, the mattress dipping as he sat down on the edge of my bed. "it's almost nine."
