"So Grandpa never wanted me?" Christian asked his father who was currently sweating at the boys' interrogation. How was he meant to explain his absence? Chloe did not bother interfering, she worked on her laptop like the two males did not exist. The woman purposely tuned them out, leaving Kristian to sort the issue himself.

"I-" Kristian started to say but Christian cut him off.

"I understand you know" the little boy said as he sat cross legged and turned to watch the show on the TV. The boy had a hint of hurt and dejection in his voice and Kristian's felt a pang in his chest. He wanted to blame Chloe for keeping the boy from him but he could not. This was all his father's fault. A man so cruel and selfish he deserved to burn in the worst parts of hell.

"I know you were younger then and could not do anything. And mummy had to run cos bad men were chasing the both of you" Christian continued.

'Bad men?' Kristian thought. 'Is that how Chloe explained to him?'  Kristian thought as he turned to look at Chloe. Chloe focused on her work and acted like the man did not exist.

The boy kept talking with his small back turned to Kristian.

Kristian rose from his chair and sat behind the boy hugging him into his large build.

"Stop hiding your hurt. It's my fault. Blame me." Kristian told his son. The boy stilled in his father's arms and then turned to look up at the man, tears in his eyes.

The boy raised his tiny fists and hit his father's chest once. Then twice. Then two little fists hit Kristian's chest repeatedly as the little boy sobbed.

"Where were you?" the boy cried.

"I thought you didn't want me" The boy continued, repeatedly confiding in his father how unwanted he felt through the years and how he hid his feelings from his mother because she was trying her hardest for the both of them.

Kristian felt great pain in his chest and his eyes watered.

"I always wanted you kiddo. If I knew where you were I would have ran over if that was it took tp see you. I would have come seen you the instant I knew you where you were. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you and mummy from bad men." Kristian told the boy, continually telling the boy how much he wished he were there from the start and how he would make it up to him.

Christian cried and soon fell asleep. Kristian carried the boy in his arms and to his room. He tucked the boy into bed and then returned to the living room where he found Chloe still sat working on her laptop.

"He's asleep now" Kristian whispered and a tear immediately slipped from Chloe's eye. Then another, then her two eyes leaked tears. She bent over and put her head on the desk, a hand over her mouth to stifle her sobs. Kristian ran a hand through his hair and moved to kneel beside Chloe.

Chloe was still in her purple scrubs and she smelled of vanilla and antiseptic.

Kristian put his arms around her and Chloe buried her head in the crook of the man's neck.

"I'm sorry...I'm so so sorry" Chloe repeatedly sobbed and Kristian repeatedly told her it was okay.

The two held themselves, years of hurt dissipating and the emptiness they shared now filling with a bond the family slowly grew.
