Info - dead characters, during the first Wizarding war, wolf star canon, pining, love letter, mourning death
In my seventh year of Hogwarts there were many students missing, but that was because parents were keeping them home as Voldemort was rising in power. There was one student though who was never mentioned and wasn't at school. Regulus Black.
I'd noticed him throughout the years. He seemed to always catch my eye. We must've had a similar sense of humor because when something ridiculous happened we always meet gazes and smirked. I'd had a handful of conversations with him, and he seemed kind if shy. I'd been led to believe that he was a death eater but that had never seemed to make sense. He wasn't gleeful cruel like Barty Crouch and Bellatrix Black. He wasn't haughtily blood purist like Lucius and Severus. He also wasn't subtly vicious like Mulciber and Rosier.
He had been so gloriously handsome and wonderfully intelligent. I remember once I'd given him a hug when he'd won the Quidditch game since we were in the same house. He'd gasped so hard and shook a bit. I wondered if he wasn't used to much affection.
"Sirius," I said, trying to catch up to the love-struck boy who was holding his boyfriend's hand. Though the Marauders were famously hateful of Slytherins, I didn't think I showed up on their radar.
"Oh hello," he said, turning to me slowly. I giggled when I saw he was wearing red lipstick and Remus's face and white button down was covered in kiss marks.
"I see you're having a lovely Valentine's Day," I said.
"He is," Remus growled.
"Well, I just wanted to ask where Regulus is? I haven't seen him all year," I said.
"Regulus?" Sirius asked dazedly.
"Your brother," I reminded.
"I don't live at home anymore, I ran away and I live with James," he said plainly.
"Oh, so you haven't heard from him?"
"I got a weird letter at the beginning of the year saying he loved me and missed me. He said even if we didn't always agree he'd always cared for me as a brother. I wrote him back but never received anything else. I hate to say I wasn't very nice, I know he was affiliated with Voldemort," Sirius said.
"So you know nothing?"
"Nothing," he responded.
"Okay, thank you," I sighed. I felt very worried. For some reason a black cloud fell over my mood. Everyone was all hearts and bright smiles but I couldn't help thinking about deeper things, casualties of war, and lost children. I knew everyone wanted to party and forget the state of the world, but that was easier said than done.
At the end of the day I felt mentally worn out and resented the fact that I had to do rounds. However, something wild happened when I rounded one of the corners. A crack and an elderly house elf stood before me.
"Y/n y/l/n, Slytherin House?" He asked in a creaky voice.
"Yes, I'm y/n," I agreed.
"Master Regulus asked me to give this to you on the fourteenth of February," he said with a sad smile.
"Do you know where he is?" I asked as I took the paper.
"Happy Valentine's Day," was all he said and then he was gone. I opened the letter and read Regulus's swooping scrawl.
"To Dearest Y/N. I know that I will be long dead before you read this, but know that for years I have held fondness in my heart for you. Sometimes a smile from you was all I needed to keep pushing through. It was for people like you, and especially you, I knew I had to sacrifice my life for the good of the Wizarding world. Know that in another life I would've made my feelings known, I hope you would be pleased to have me. We could've been giggling teens in love. Perhaps we would've even been married and had children. It would be lovely, but alas. Know that you are the most beautiful, lovely, intelligent, kind, and unique girl I've ever met. I adored pretty much everything about you. That day you hugged me on the Quidditch pitch, I knew you were it for me. I stopped attempting to get any other girl. If it weren't for things I found out the week after that, I think we would be happy together right now. If there is an afterlife, and you get here, please tell me all about your wonderful life, and have a wonderful life, please. Always remember, you will have an angel looking down and watching over you if I'm lucky enough to get wings that is. Happy Valentines Day Ma Coeur, Yours even in death, R.A.B"
I had started crying by the second sentence. Dead, dead and it seemed I was the only one who knew. I didn't know what he'd done, but now I wanted to, dearly. I wanted to tell the world about what Regulus Black had done for them.
I shook and fell to the ground clutching the letter. I had no right to feel so heartbroken. I couldn't help it. I was wailing and holding the paper to my heart.
"Happy Valentine's Day Regulus," I said as I looked up at the high ceiling. I hoped he saw me looking up, appreciating and caring for him. "I miss you."
