"You dropped this," I said to the pretty Gryffindor. A paper had slipped from her bag. I realized as I held it, that it was a howler. I paled, but she didn't look bothered. Her jaw was set and her eyes were fiery. As she reached forward, and her sleeve pushed up, I saw a tapestry of bruises on her arm.

"Are you okay?" I asked her.

"I'm fine," she snapped. "Why wouldn't I be?"

She whirled away, but something about her intrigued me. Over the next couple weeks my eyes followed her when I saw her. I listened closely so I could find out her name. One day, I actually overheard her name. I listened in discreetly.

"I'd probably off myself if I had her family. She has to get O's in everything, AND take every class. I don't know how she isn't dropping dead from stress."

"You know her parents actually visit often, to make sure she's on track, it's mental. I didn't even know you could do that," said the other girl.

I had to see if Sirius knew anything about her. He seemed to know things about everyone so I could give it a shot. I found him with his friends not too far away.

"Do you know anything about y/n y/l/n?" I asked him, out of breath. He gave me an odd look.

"Why do you care?" He asked.

"She looks so sad every time I see her. She's cold as ice, but, you've always had a way of making people melt, I thought you might know."

"I know her parents are basically abusive, if not physically then verbally. The amount of howlers she gets are insane."

"That poor girl," I said dismally.

"You're crushing aren't you Reggie?" Sirius asked.

"Maybe, I just feel horrible. Imagine going through that?"

"I can't," Sirius shook his head.

I decided to look for her, offer my help in anyway I could. Searching the castle was no easy task, but it turned out luck was on my side. I found her quite easily on the Astronomy tower.

She was hugging herself, cold facade gone. She was weeping, but the wind was loud enough to almost drown it out. Without thinking I went to her and pulled her into my arms.

"What are you doing?" She screamed.

"I just want to help, I just want you to be okay," I said desperately.

"Why do you even care?" She sobbed.

"I saw the marks on your arm, I heard about your parents. I can't stop it, but can't I at least be your friend? You always look so, so lonely," I said in a rush. I was shocked when she didn't hex me, but let her face crumple. She clung to my robes and cried into my chest.

Over the course of the year she got more and more open with me. Her stories were terrible, but I listened for her. Eventually, we started dating. I wasn't sure how it happened, she just kissed me before bed one night and told me she loved me and goodnight. It'd been simple.

"Love please," I begged her. I was playing with her hair. We were cuddling on top of the tower where I'd first found her crying.

"They'll be so mad."

"But they won't be able to do shit about it. You'll be safe with me and Sirius. My parents already said yes. Run away with me. Let this be the last year they steal from you."

"Oh, alright Reg," she sighed and I kissed her happily.

On the train home she was nervous, but I promised to help her. We walked straight past her parents and up to mine instead.

"Hello, Mrs. and Mr. Black," she said shyly.

"Oh darling, call us Orion and Walburga, nothing so formal. Our Reg has told us all about you. He was right you are gorgeous," my mother said and I saw the tiny smile of hope on my girl's face.

"It's very nice that you're letting me stay with you," she said.

"Don't mention it," Orion waved his hand. "Our house is big enough for twenty more of you without causing a problem."

"Thank you Regulus," she mumbled happily as I led her away.

"Anything for you," I said and kissed her cheek happily.
