"So, since you're stuck here," Dust began, rummaging through the closet, "we don't want you to freeze, right?"
"Didn't you try to kill me before?" I reminded him. "And now you actually care? How sweet."
"I do not care, however my brother does and even though he isn't real I like to keep him happy." Dust threw a pillow at my head.
I caught it. "How cute."
"Shut up." He muttered.
"So, do you have a bedroom I can sleep in or am I supposed to sleep on the couch?" I asked. "I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that."
"Yes, I have an extra bedroom. No, you cannot use it." He added.
"Uh-"
"Don't ask why. You can..." He paused.
"I'll just sleep on the couch." I said quickly.
Even if it is cold. I thought. The heat had gone out about an hour ago, and it was starting to get cold.
"Here." He walked over and dumped three thick blankets on my head. I spent a good minute untangling myself from them as he went to go do who knows what. After I untangled myself, I realized he had set up a few candles.
"How romantic." I teased. He glowered at me.
"Shut up or I will kill you." He spoke.
"Heh, sorry."
He sat down on the couch next to me and tried to turn on the TV.
"Dust, we don't have power." I said to him.
He threw the remote behind him. "Dang."
"We could..." I paused, thinking of something we could do. "Play a board game...?"
He raised a bony eyebrow at me. "A board game."
I nodded.
"You wanna play a board game. With the same psychotic skeleton who tried to kill you earlier."
I nodded.
"You're even more insane than I am." He muttered. "Besides, I don't have any."
"Oh."
"One sec." He teleported somewhere and I sat on the couch, all three very thick blankets pulled up to my neck. He came back later with a deck of cards. "All I've got is this."
"Alright." I said, then paused. "I can't play cards."
"Why not?"
"I don't know how."
He narrowed his eyes. "You mean you're how many years old and you never learned how to play cards?"
I nodded.
"Good grief." He threw the deck on the table. "What can you play?"
"Um... Go fish...?"
He shrugged. "Whatever. I guess we can play that."
~One time skip brought to you by Geno Snas.~
"And I win." Dust slapped his cards down on the table with a grin.
"Heh, yeah, you win." I said, admitting defeat. "Good game."
He cleaned up the cards and then settled down on the couch next to me. We sat in awkward silence. I shifted my position and pulled the blankets up to my neck.
"So, um..." Dust started awkwardly. "Do you... Like... Snow?"
"Yeah." I replied simply.
He nodded.
This is so awkward what is going on. I thought to myself.
"Yes, I noticed." Dust muttered. For a second I thought he had read my mind. Then I realized he was probably talking to his brother.
"What was life like here before the human came?" I asked.
He froze. "W-What?"
"I- I mean, you don't have to answer it!" I added quickly. "I'm just curious, is all..."
He looked at the table. "It was nice."
...
Is that all I get? I thought.
"My bro was always hoping a human would fall down here so he could capture them and become a member of the Royal Guard." He went on. "Six humans fell. I watched him set up so many puzzles and traps, all for them to escape and go on to Waterfall, where Undyne would wait. She'd take the humans to the king, and then he would take their souls. It was a repeating process. I would sit at my station and look out for the humans, and when a human came by, I would hide them from my bro and sometimes give them advice and a little... Friendly warning." His eye flared red for a moment and he grinned. "But it was always the same. When there was no human down here, I would work at my sentry station, go to Grillby's in my free time, and sleep. And then Frisk fell down here. They had so much Determination that they could wind back the clock and act like things never happened. Except each time, I never fully forgot. They'd fall down here again, and I would feel a sense of deja vu, or recognize their face but not sure who they were. And then I snapped." He sighed. "Do I miss the old days of human hunting and boring work? Sometimes. Would I go back if I had the chance? Definitely."
I thought about what he had just said for a moment.
I wonder...
"Dust, do you think there is a way to go back?" I asked. "I mean, you said earlier that you gained the power to reset. So, why can't you just rewind time?"
"Because if I did, Frisk would come back. And we'd enter the same cycle. I'd kill everyone to match their LV, and then I'd gain control over the timeline again." He replied. "I can't go through that again."
I felt something smooth and bony squeeze my hand from under the blankets.
I then realized that sometime during him speaking, I had shifted closer to him. He had one of the blankets pulled over him, and he kept squeezing my hand like a stress toy.
I squeezed his reassuringly.
His eye flared red and purple for a moment. He tensed up, and then after a second or two, he relaxed.
I'm the first one to give him comfort in... However long it's been. I thought. He's been alone for so long, with nobody but his ghost brother. He's not used to this. Being comforted. Being... Cared for.
I looked at him.
We're not so different, Dust. We're both alone in this cruel world.
I squeezed his hand once more.
But we've got each other now.
He looked at me. For a second I thought I saw desperation in his eye sockets.
We'll take care of each other.
