The next morning it's extremely hard to get out of bed. After the amount of food I ate at dinner last night, my body longs to sleep in. Instead I drag myself over to my wardrobe and pull out my uniform. I head down to the shower to clean up and get dressed. Mia's bed is empty, she most likely has been up for a while. I'll never understand morning people.
After my shower I put on my uniform, trying my best to make it look like I wasn't too lazy to press it. I tie my yellow and black tie around my neck, leaving it a bit loose for comfort. I take a look in the mirror and realize that with my bedhead and smudged makeup from yesterday, I actually look like a badger. Great.
I set to work on making myself look more like a human. Mia comes in when I'm nearing the end.
"Hey. You almost ready? Breakfast starts in five." She's bright eyes and bushy tailed, holding a book in her hands. She must have been doing some morning reading.
"Sure." I quickly run a brush through my hair as I take my stuff back to the dorm. We head down to breakfast and the great hall is incredibly loud. I lead us over to the Hufflepuff table and take a seat with some of out fellow seventh years. I look around the table then feel a pang in my chest when I remember the empty space left by Cedric. He would have been in seventh year too. Probably sitting a few seats down from me, talking to his friends about the next quidditch match.
I'm not the only one that feels his absence. Most of the Hufflepuffs in our year are quiet. Breakfast goes by quite somberly for us, but at least the rest of the table is unaffected. Especially the first years that never even met him.
After I finish eating, I get up from the table. Mia is still eating, so I tell her I'll catch up with her later. I leave the great hall, slowly walking back to my dorm to get my books for my first few classes. I take a bit of a round about route, lost in thought.
I am walking down a hallway when suddenly two figures step out, one on either side.
"Hello." They greet me in unison. My face flushes when I realize who it is.
"Hi." My voice is quiet. I'm not normally a very loud person.
"Where are you headed to?" One of them links arms on my right and the other on the left.
"My room. I got to get my books." I explain nervously. Is this the beginning of some sort of prank?
"What class do you have first?" The one on my right asks.
"Potions. What about you guys?" I've never been particularly close with the boys. We've had classes together plenty over the years and would occasionally study together. But we weren't besties by any means.
"Lucky for you, that's our first class as well." The left one says.
"We could sit together." The one on the right pick up where his brother left off.
"Um. Sure. If you want." I reluctantly agree, hoping that being near them wouldn't mean a year of frequent detentions. Especially with Umbridge around. Her pleasant and pink façade terrified me. Her eyes were those of a deranged person.
"Excellent." They both say together.
"Alright. Quick question." I stop in the middle of the hallway, forcing them to stop as well. "Which is which? And please be honest."
"Alright, fine." One of them agrees.
"But just this once." The other adds.
"If you can't remember."
"We won't tell you again."
"Fine, I'll just remember then." I say expectantly.
"I'm Fred," the one on the right claims.
"And of course I'm George." The left one grins.
"And don't forget it!" They both smirk at me. I study both of them for a moment, memorizing the subtle differences between the two. Their noses are slightly different. Georges points a bit more down than his brother's, and Fred's part is slightly more centered.
"Got it." I nod, satisfied.
"You sure?" Fred challenges.
"Maybe we should test her." George stage whispers. They grab my shoulder and spin me around a few times before swapping places several times. In my now dizzy state I would have no chance of keeping track.
"Alright." Fred grins.
"Which is which?" George shrugs.
"Fred," I point to the one on the right. "And George," I point to the one on the left. "You guys didn't even switch places."
"Lucky guess." George dismisses it. "Won't happen again."
"Not even Mum has figured it out. Doubtful you could in a few seconds." Fred comments, linking arms with me once again. I feel kind of bad for them that their own mother couldn't even keep them straight. Surely there were more characteristics to tell them apart. Maybe she was just too overwhelmed with all of the kids to have the proper time to notice.
"Well, I'm not your Mum." I start leading them to Hufflepuff common room. I leave them outside while I run and grab my books, returning after a minute or two. We head to the classroom next, they're discussing some of the plans for their new products to sell to the students. I give the appropriate 'wow' and 'that's really cool' every once in a while.
We find seats towards the back. Sadly Mia doesn't have potions this year. She didn't score well enough on her O.W.L.s. Not that she had wanted to take it anyway. We still have a few minutes before class starts and the boys sit on either side of me.
"So who is who?" George asks me.
"What?" I am confused for a second before I realize they are quizzing me again.
"Really George. Is this all that I'm going to hear all year?" I shake my head sadly at him. "I told you I got it."
"Twice in a row." Fred muses, tapping his chin. "Could be a coincidence."
"Or it could not." I roll my eyes and take out my potions book and my note taking supplies.
Fred picks up one of my sparkly gel pens off the table. "What is this?"
"A pen," I take it back from him, popping off the lid. I open my purple covered notebook and write the date at the top. "See?"
They stare at the pink glitter writing.
"So it's a magic quill or sorts?" George picks up one of my other ones, removing the lid to inspect it.
"No. It's a muggle pen." I open my backpack and show them my collection inside. "I have like thirty different colors. Makes note taking more interesting."
"Could I have one?" They both ask at the same time.
"Fine." I sigh, digging around in my bag. I hand an orange one to Fred and a green one to George. "But don't tell people. I'm not giving any more away."
"You hear that Georgie? We're special." Fred leans in, uncomfortably close. I instinctually lean back, of course bumping into George, who is also in my space.
"I do enjoy being special, Freddie." George grins, his face about an inch and a half from my own.
"Geez. Give a girl some space." I blush, pushing them both back by their shoulders.
"Alright then." They sigh, pretending to be hurt. "But we'll miss you."
"Whatever." I mumble as Professor Snape marches into the room. The look on his face clearly communicates that this is going to suck.

Hope you enjoyed the first interaction with the boys!
