We end up going to a muggle sandwich shop for lunch. It was fairly busy, the other office workers taking their break similar to myself. After getting our food, we find bench at a local park and sit.
"So, you said you wanted to talk?" I break the ice, diving right into the conversation.
"Why can't you trust me on this?" Fred asks, and I try to think of how to say it properly.
"Because you didn't trust me." I pause. "If you had been straight up with me in the beginning, explaining there was something you needed to take care of, then I would have accepted that. But you snuck around, lied, and hoped that I wouldn't find out."
"I-" He cuts himself off, pondering my words. "I screwed up, huh?"
"Yeah, a bit." I agree, taking a bite of my sandwich.
"I just didn't want to upset you, so I lied. And I shouldn't have. And I'm sorry." He clasps his hands in his lap nervously.
"I'm trying not to read too terribly much into the situation." I take a deep breath. "But the way you've been handling things, gives the appearance of cheating."
Fred swears quietly and slumps in his seat, hiding his face in his hands.
"I'm not cheating." He mumbles.
"Okay." I take another bite, worried I'm pushing too much. How much is this my business? Are we far enough in the relationship for me to need to know where he's been? Or am I being a paranoid control freak? I genuinely don't know.
"I was in counseling."
"Oh." That was nothing close to what I had been expecting.
"And I didn't tell you because it's with Jenna."
"Who the heck is Jenna?" I wrinkle my nose.
"My ex fiancé."
Oh. This is... a lot.
I'm not sure how to feel.
Am I mad?
Am I jealous?
Am I proud of him for trying to work past it?
Probably a messy mix of all the above.
"Okay."
"Okay?" He repeats skeptically.
"Look, it's a lot to think about." I admit. "And it doesn't explain why you didn't come home."
"It was part of the therapy." I clears his throat.
"You didn't sleep with her did you?" I blurt out, panicking for a moment.
"No!" Fred leans back, startled. "I told you I didn't cheat on you."
"I know. Sorry. I panicked."
"I was having dinner at her parents. We talked though everything that happened, and why the break up occurred. They were apparently very upset after we cancelled."
"Yeah, that makes sense, I guess."
"And it was late, so I stayed alone in a guest room." He gives me a pointed look and I flush.
"Sorry." I mumble, eyes dropping shamefully to my lap.
"Don't be. I screwed things up by keeping secrets. I gave you reasons to be worried. I'm sorry." He takes one of my hands in his, bringing it up to his lips and gently kissing my knuckles.
"I forgive you." I whisper, leaning my head onto his shoulder, still feeling confused, but better.
"Does that mean you'll move back in?" He asks, running his thumb across the ridges on the back of my hand.
