We return to the library separately, hoping no one would notice how long we'd been gone. He goes back first since I had a lot of straightening up to do. I wish I had time to run back to the dorm for new underwear, but that would take at least fifteen minutes and I'd already been gone too long. I'd have to wait until I went to put my books away.
I sit down in my chair, not looking at Fred. I know if I did, I wouldn't be able to stop grinning at him.
"Oh, you let your hair down." Mia comments, noting the difference.
"Yeah. The ponytail was starting to hurt a bit." I lie to her. The real reason is so that it could cover all of the red marks on my neck.
"Looks cute." She returns to her reading, not giving any indications of suspicion. Fred has his hand over his mouth casually trying to hide his smirk. I glance around the table, everyone doing their work, completely unaware. That is until my eyes reach Celeste. She's looking back and forth between Fred and I, eyes wide.
My cheeks flush, accidentally confirming to her what just happened, and her jaw drops. Fred notices and his smirk vanishes. We both silently beg her not to tell, and she just nods, letting us know she understands.
I am very embarrassed, but she doesn't seem to be all that fazed.
The first free period ends and everybody but Celeste has to leave for classes. Fred winks at me as they leave, knowing that Celeste is about to question me. We watch the other leave. As soon as they're gone Celeste slams her book shut.
"Spill." She demands.
Things with Celeste were a bit rough for the first week or so after she asked to just be friends. But I got past my feelings, and we fell back into the rhythm of friendship.
"About?" I start going through my backpack, pretending to look for something so I don't have ot look at her.
"Are you and Fred dating?" She asks bluntly.
"No." I reply honestly. "No, we're not."
"But something is going on?" She pushes, knowing what she saw.
"Maybe." I don't confirm or deny it.
"Hazel, I won't tell anyone." Celeste puts a hand on my arm causing me to look up at her. "You can talk to me."
"Okay." I bite my lip anxiously. "Fred and I have hooked up a couple of time."
"Oh! More that once?" Her eyebrows shoot up, surprised. "I though you guys were just making out in the hall."
"Oh, god." I cover my face with my hands, wishing to disappear.
"I'm not judging." She giggles at my reaction. "Just a bit surprised. I didn't peg you for the hook up type."
"I'm not." I groan, worried suddenly that things with Fred were a mistake. "He's the only one I've ever..." I trail off, not sure I want to continue.
"But you're not dating?"
"No. I'm not interested in him like that." I start putting my books away. I doubt any more studying is getting done now.
"How long?" She asks and I flinch. "You don't have to answer if you're uncomfortable."
"I know." I sigh, leaning my head back. "A month."
"A month?" I can see her doing the math in her head.
"Yep." I pop the 'P' sound rather loudly. "I was really upset after our talk at the owlery. I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend."
