I don't say a word.
But he comes down the steps anyway. I clench my eyes shut and try to be invisible. I hear his footsteps as he searches the room. And then they stop right in front of the table. I hold my breath as I wait.
The rustle of fabric and then a sigh.
"There you are." He says softly and I open my eyes. Fred Weasley peers under the table at me, tears in his brown eyes.
"Is he okay?" I ask, my lip quivering. Did he hurt my husband? Is Amycus okay?
"Who? Teddy?" Fred reaches to touch the boy and I shift away.
"Did you hurt Amycus?" I sniff, my own tears trickling down my cheeks.
"What?" He frowns. "We're here to rescue you from him."
"No! Please don't hurt him! I love him." I sob, scrambling to get out from under the table. My flight must take Fred off guard, because I am able to get past him to the steps. I run up the wooden planks, breaking through the busted door.
"Amycus?" I call frantically searching.
"In here!" He yells back to me and I run in the direction of his voice. I burst into the living room and freeze. Snape has him against the wall, wand pointed to his throat.
"Let him go!" I shout, grabbing the man's arm and tugging his wand away from my husband. I shove myself between the two men, using my body as a shield. "Don't hurt him!"
"Hazel!" Snape barks angrily. "Get out of the way."
"No! I won't let you hurt my husband!" I growl, standing up as straight as I could. "If you want to hurt him, you'll have to go through me first."
Fred, breathless from running up the steps, enters the living room.
"We have a problem." He wheezes, and Snape scoffs.
"Obviously."
A third set of footsteps come running and Draco comes from the direction of the nursery.
"They weren't in the bedroo-" He stops mid sentence when he sees me and Teddy.
"DACO!" Teddy screams excitedly, wiggling to get out of my grasp. I quickly duck to set the tot on the floor so he could go to his uncle. He runs to Draco as fast as his chubby little legs can carry him. The blonde man picks him up, holding him tightly.
"I've got you little one." He coos, sniffing as he pats the boy's matching blonde hair.
"You're outnumbered Carrow. It's time to surrender." Snape sneers, wand still raised.
"So I can rot in Azkaban?" Amycus chuckles darkly. "Not a chance."
Suddenly the unthinkable happens. A wand is pressed into my throat by my own husband.
"You're going to let me get past the apparation wards, or the girl dies."
"What?" I squeak, my heart breaking in my chest.
"I'm sorry, Love." He apologizes as he maneuvers towards the door, keeping me as a shield. "But this is the best way you can help me."
"Okay." I sniff, trying to understand. "Anything for you."
Snape doesn't let me out of his sight as we back through the front door. I know that the apparition point is about ten feet down the cobbles. We're almost there. Amycus shifts his grip and I realize that the way he is holding me isn't for side along. He isn't going to take me with him.
I start sobbing as he pulls me down the front steps. Both Fred and Snape step out behind us. Draco must be keeping Teddy safe. Another step back.
"Please don't leave me." I whisper to Amycus, praying that he'll change his mind.
"I'll come find you again." He promises, breath hot on my ear. "I did it once, I'll do it a thousand times."
"Okay." I hiccup, sobs subsiding. I could be strong for him.
Two more steps to go.
One more.
Fred is a few feet in front of me, wand ready to cast the moment I'm safe. Snape's a few yards to the side, eyes narrowed. And then my husband takes the last step back, out of the wards, to freedom.
He roughly shoves me into Fred, knocking us both over, the Weasley boy's wand clattering on the cobblestones.
"Sectumsempra!" Snape yells, wand flicking with precision. I scream as everything slows. Amycus is starting to distort as the apparation takes hold, the green spell speeding towards him. But which would be faster? Would he make it?
My scream continues to rip from the depths of my soul as Amycus crumples to the ground, blood pouring as everything comes back to speed. I claw to get to him, but Fred has a grip on my weak body. Amycus coughs, blood spurting from the massive wounds in his chest.
"Save him!" I scream, looking at Snape with eyes blurred with tears. With a growl, the man glides and kneels next to my dying husband. He waves his wand over the wounds, but it doesn't do much.
"No. nonononono." I sob, collapsing into Fred's arms. I feel like my soul is dying. My reason for living.
"At least I got two months of her. She's a lot more fun when she doesn't fight." Amycus wheezes wetly, goading the man holding me. Fred is up in a flash, wand pointed at the dying man. Without hesitation, he casts.
"Crucio!"
The screams the left my husband's mouth will forever haunt me. I turn and vomit into the once comforting rosebushes. I heave, the little bit I had eaten for lunch making a reappearance. I am still hunched over when I feel it. The snap. The breaking of the vow I took on our wedding day.
Death has claimed Amycus Carrow.
After a breath, unconsciousness thankfully claims me as well.

I wake up somewhere else completely. I groggily sit up, looking for my husband. Instead, I find a sleeping Draco, slouched in the chair beside my bed. Memories coming back, I quietly climb out of bed, hoping against all hopes that it was just a bad dream. But the hole in my chest says it isn't. I stumble out into the hall, clutching the flimsy gown around my shoulders. My feet slap on the cold floor as I stagger along.
"Miss Taylor!" A panicked healer appears in front of me. "You can't be out of bed!"
"But my husband!" I cry, grabbing her wrist. "He's dead. I need to see him one last time."
"I'm sorry." She frowns. "That's not possible."
"But." I protest weakly as she guides me back to bed. She is finishing getting me settled, Draco now awake, when a herd of healers enter the room.
"We are going to do a quick check before the Aurors come in with their questions, okay?" The woman in the front tells me, rubbing sanitizer on her hands.
"Aurors? Are they going to catch the man that killed my husband. It was Severus Snape and Fred Weasley." I tell her as she listens to my heart and respirations.
"I don't know. But they can answer that for you in a moment." She says before continuing on to my blood pressure. They finish they're tests, and most of the group leaves, but I catch her arm before she can as well.
"Could you..." I hesitate. "Check for pregnancy? The muggle tests all said no, but I'm weeks late."
"Oh, you poor dear." Her brow crinkles. "Of course."
I let her arm go and she leaves as well.
Maybe if I am pregnant, a piece of my husband will still live on. I would always have a part of him with me. Maybe it would ease the ache in my chest.
