Twenty

Jade heard her hair-raising scream from the basement. She abandoned her sparring session with Aiden and dashed up the stairs, arriving on the second floor before the elevator. She ran straight to Maddy's room and found the blonde kneeling on the floor, tears streaming down her face.

"Maddy, what happened?" She asked, moving forward slowly to comfort her friend.

Maddy simply pointed to something underneath her bed and broke down in hysterical sobs. Mason came forward to console Maddy while Jade retrieved the item.

It was a white square box, no bigger than the palm of Jade's hand. Whatever lay inside this box was enough to reduce Maddy to a ball on her floor, rocking back and forth with her green eyes wide as saucers. Maddy, normally such a bright person. It was unsettling to see her cry. Jade was almost scared.

Nevertheless, she opened the box and carefully looked inside. In the centre of a white silk cushion sat a pearl, the size if a grape. Jade attempted to remove it, but the moment her flesh made contact with the smooth surface, awful images filled her mind.

A family cowering in fear. The mother screaming and crying. Suddenly, an angel appears. A glowing silver blade in his hand. With an expressionless face, he cuts the throat of the family. One by one. Then he says, "Stop this uprising. If you initiate this war, you will pay with the lives of your loved ones!"

Jade sat on the floor in shock as she returned to reality. Staring at Maddy, she asked, "Was that your family?"

Maddy nodded, staring into nothingness and muttered, "Our people are vile and cruel. Vile and cruel, cruel and vile. Horrible...Awful...They would do that? They-they would do that..." She trailed off, mumbling incoherent sentences.

Mason stood her up and began to lead her from the room when Jade said, "You're right about one thing, Maddy. Those people are vile and cruel. They're also barbaric, evil and immeasurably immoral. They're sinful and malicious. The angels, especially my father are all of these things. But they are not our people." Then to the room, in which stood Jordan, Darren, Aiden and Lela as well as Mason and Maddy, Jade said, "We are the Fallen! And we will rise!"
