Forty-Two

Luke was watching Jade battle her father with worry and interest. He was terrified that he would lose her, but he was intrigued to know what she would do. When she stood over the judge's lifeless body, Luke knew he needed to intervene before she passed out, but he was too late. By the time he reached her, she was already falling.

He held her, ripped his T-Shirt off and applied pressure to her wound with it, fear creeping into his heart when the fabric was soaked in her blood in seconds. He picked up Jade's unconscious form and carried her hurriedly to a car close by. Starting the engine, he took off, hoping to help her before it became too late.

Jade awoke to the smell of chemical cleaners and bright white light. At first she was confused, but before long her last memories trickled back to her. The angels and demons, her father, Luke...

She became aware that she was lying down and carefully sat up. Taking in her surroundings, she realised that she was in a hospital. Jade pulled the thin covers off her leg and inspected her wound, which was still burning. It had thirteen stitches that she could find and was wrapped in a clean white bandage.

Swinging her legs over the side of the hospital bed, Jade slid down and was immensely relieved when she was able to hold herself upright. Jade walked in search of someone familiar, hoping there was still someone who cared. As she trekked through the hospital, she noticed how empty it was. There were spider webs in the corners and the floor was covered in a layer of dirt.

She was beginning to worry when Luke appeared through one of the doors. "Jade! Come on!" he called urgently, running over with a bag, which he handed to her, "we've got to go," he continued.

He pushed a dazed Jade into a bathroom and told her to get changed. She opened the bag to find a pair of skinny jeans, a tank top and a hoodie, which she pulled on, leaving her feet unavoidably bare. She re-joined Luke feeling more than slightly confused.

"What's going on?" she asked, following him out into the hospital parking lot, which was equally as uninhabited.

"The angels abandoned all reason after you killed the judge and the demons refused to obey commands, even from the Father," Luke replied, "never before have there been so many demons allowed to roam free on earth. I guess they decided they like it."

"So where are we going?" Jade whispered once they were inside a car and driving down the street.

"We have to leave Australia, the angels are still after you and the Fallen split when the fighting started. The demons are running free, doing whatever they want. The country is in ruin," he explained.

"And what about Jordan?" she asked hesitantly, unsure as to whether or not she truly wanted an answer.

"I'm sorry, Jade," he said, "he left."

She frowned, "what do you mean? I don't-He left?"

Luke nodded sadly, "he got out of the country while I took you to the hospital."

Jade didn't want to believe it, but if Jordan wasn't here now, what other explanation was there? Sadly, she accepted that Jordan had let her go. She stared out of the car window, watching the Australian scenery flash past.

Eventually, the two reached an airstrip, where a single plain was waiting. Jade realised as she climbed inside it, that the Darkness seemed to be gone. For the first time in months, she was happy. And she knew it was only because of the man beside her. This man who she loved, she knew, with all that was in her.

Whatever came next, she felt in her heart that she could overcome it with Luke beside her. The darkness she knew was inside him made her heart race and his strength steadied her. He was the rational to her emotional. The shadow to her burning daylight. He made what seemed unbearable, manageable.

Jadeneeded him.
