Twenty-Three
Over the next few days, Jade found that she was simply waiting for death to take her. Jordan had not once entered her room to see her and neither had he inquired about her to Maddy, or any of the other Fallen. Jade knew that Maddy was wracked with guilt, the girl could hardly stand to look at her.
One day, shortly after the month of August began, nine of the Fallen came to see Jade in her room. Standing before her were Maddy and Aiden, Hayden, Shyla and Georgina, Corrine and Matthew, Dylan and his sister Riley.
Jade slowly and carefully sat up. "What is this?" She asked.
Maddy didn't even glance Jade's way as she answered. "I want to help you. I know a way I can, but it's dangerous."
"What's going on, Maddy?"
"I'm going to help you." She said, taking Jade's frozen hand in both of her own. They stayed that way for several minutes, Maddy with her eyes closed and the Fallen watching on silently. Suddenly, Jade felt immeasurably tired, her eyes slowly drifting closed. As she lied there, she realised that this was the end of her. She was on the edge of death.
Then the most miraculous thing happened. Jade felt the cold seeping out of her body. First it rose from her feet, flowing up through her legs and her abdomen, and then her chest and her arms and her head. Finally, it creeped along the hand that Maddy was holding and left her.
Only then did Jade realise how Maddy was helping her. She'd taken the dark magic into herself. Jade opened her eyes to see her friend being supported by Riley and Aiden. "I'm sorry, Jade." She mumbled before she fell limp and a last breath of air escaped her.

Jade could not stop crying for three days after Maddy had been buried. Her best friend, the closest thing to a sister she had anymore, was dead. And she'd done it to save Jade.
On the fourth day, Jordan found her in her room. It was the first time she'd seen him since he told her she couldn't go to see Alistair. Now she wished she'd listened to him. "Jade," He said gently, "You have to leave. We have an uprising to continue."
"Jordan, it's my fault she died!" Jade sobbed, trying to make him understand.
"You can't keep blaming yourself, Jade!" Jordan yelled, growing angry, "She led you to the man who put the dark power inside you! She killed herself."
Jade was appalled, "Jordan! How could you say that? She had no idea who he really was. I should have known I couldn't get my wings back."
Jordan shook his head in disbelief, "Because it's all about you, isn't it, Jade? You're so selfish, I told you not to go to him, but you did it anyway because you wanted your wings back! You're the First to Fall! Well you're not that special, Jade."
"Jordan," Jade said carefully, "What are you saying? This isn't you, I know it isn't."
Jordan smirked, "Well maybe you don't know me as well as you thought. I can't do this with you, Jade. You always put yourself first."
Jade had tears in her eyes, "Jordan, please, I need you. I can't do this without you."
As Jordan left her, he said, "I used to think I needed you too, but I think I'll be better off on my own."
