Twenty-Seven

Luke rang the doorbell, his heart racing with the nerves he felt, standing on the threshold. The tone was answered by a short blonde woman with startlingly green eyes. "Can I help you?" she asked.

Luke cleared his throat, "yeah, I'm Luke Iver. I was just wondering if I could see Jade Hillcrest."

"You understand that I can't let just anyone in, right?" asked the woman, raising a slender eyebrow, "who are you exactly?"

Luke smiled, anticipating this, "I'm Torn," he said, peeling his T-Shirt off his back, "see? Got the scars to prove it."

"So you want to join the rebellion. Okay, I'm Riley, by the way," she said, extending her hand.

Instead of simply shaking it as a man in the current ages would, Luke took Riley's hand and placed a gentle kiss on the back, allowing a smirk to reach his lips. But the woman just scoffed, "you'll have to speak to Mason, she's in the basement. Take the elevator."

Luke sent her a wink before sauntering past and into the hall. It was simple, with off white walls and a light grey tiled floor. Luke liked it. The elevator was much the same and the journey to the basement was short.

When Luke stepped out of the lift, he expected a medium sized room with thin carpet and a sofa and TV. When he saw the large expanse of concrete flooring and canvas punching bags hanging from the ceiling at points throughout the room. There were weights of all different sizes lining one wall and near the opposite wall stood several bars of varying heights, for chin-ups, Luke assumed.

"Hey, can I help you?" asked a woman with short brown hair and blue eyes.

"I'm Luke Iver, I want to join you. You must be Mason."

"Welcome, Luke. Do you have any experience in physical combat?"

Luke shrugged. "A little. I really want to see Jade, though. Can you take me to her?"

Mason looked taken aback, "I'm not sure you should, she's not in the best state at the moment."

"It's really important," Luke told her, hoping she would give in.

"Alright, fine. Follow me," she said, walking into the elevator. Luke followed, anticipation growing in his chest.

When the door opened before Luke and he saw his first glimpse of the First to Fall, he was shocked. Sitting on the windowsill, staring out the bay window, was a woman with wavy black hair hanging around her face and grey eyes devoid of life, black circles making her look older and slightly maniacal.

She didn't stir when the door creaked, or when Mason said, "Jade, Luke Iver is here to see you." She continued to stare out the window at the city in fall.

Luke stared. Even this riddled with the Darkness, he could see that she was beautiful beyond measure. This was not something he'd anticipated. He'd not expected to be so struck by Jade Hillcrest that he could no longer bring himself to perform the task he'd been planning.

Luke walked over to Jade and sat in the window with her, silently staring out at the city in her company.
