Forty
Luke couldn't bear to see how ruined Jade was. Her black hair frizzed and messy, her grey eyes wide. It broke his heart, which was unfamiliar to him. He failed to think before he acted, he didn't fully comprehend the fact that Jordan was standing only ten feet away. But if he had, he wouldn't have felt a single concern.
He pressed his lips to Jade's gently, but the moment he felt her sigh into him, his emotions took him over and he gripped her waist, standing them both up and kissing her passionately. He could feel her tears still flowing, but she was silent as she kissed back with an urgency Luke hadn't felt in her before.
He worried that she was coming apart.

Jade felt horrible. Jordan was standing not twenty feet away and there she was, clinging to Luke while they kissed. She wished she could truthfully say that she didn't know why she was kissing him, but she did know.
She knew she felt as though she was held together only by the love Luke had for her. She knew she felt in her heart that she needed him. And hadn't she always felt that? For as long as she'd known Luke, even before she acknowledged him, she sensed that she was only healing because of him.
She could tell she was breaking down, here in this moment in Coober Pedy, but she was held up by the strength that Luke offered. Her hands travelled up his shoulders and through his brown hair, pulling him closer. He responded by placing his hands on her hips and drawing her nearer to him.
Eventually, Jade regained a sense of presence and remembered that Jordan was watching. But when she pulled away from Luke, she found a scene that shocked her. The angels, she had been expecting. They fought the Fallen with spirit blades, the silver light striking against the black of the night.
What Jade had not been anticipating, were the hundreds of thousands of demons, running between the people in the crowd, who were screaming, fleeing with their families. Jade watched in horror as a dreadful demon grabbed a hold of a woman in its terrible claw-fingered hands and ripped her in half.
Jade saw a young boy, not five feet away, screaming and crying for his mother. She felt sick to her stomach to know that she'd brought this trepidation to the humans, throwing them into the middle of a war they knew nothing of.
In that moment, Jade saw herself as the selfish, repulsive person she must have been to indifferently sacrifice people for her own cause.
She was ripped out of her horror and musings by a vicious looking demon launching itself at her. She dodged the attack with a fair amount of ease and raised her fists, searching around herself for a weapon and preparing herself for the most difficult experience of her life.
Rolling to the side of another flying leap, Jade found a thick branch from the tree to her right. Picking it up and swinging, she clubbed the demon in the head and turned to find a sight she'd never have predicted. It was a sight to drain the blood from her face and loosen her grip on her weapon, causing to fall to the ground while Jade simply stared in shock, unable to believe what she saw before her.
