Ten

Jade had still been young when it had happened. She didn't remember all of the details, but she'd been reminded many times over the years. The woman who'd done the unthinkable and fallen in love with a human. The woman who had willingly given up her wings and left Heaven, never to return.

And now, Jade was standing in that woman's bathroom, stripping out of her clothes before she showered away the stress and grime of the past day and a half.

When she turned on the hot water, Malice mewed quietly and she quickly petted him before stepping underneath the jets of hot water. The effect was instantaneous. She sighed as the heat worked away the tension in her muscles, leaving her relaxed.

Eventually, she stepped out of the shower and dried off, before stepping into the clothes that Lela had, surprisingly, given to her. A pair of jeans and a big hoodie with a woollen jacket for later.

She let Malice out of the bathroom and walked back into the living room, drying her black hair with her towel. "She emerges." Lela commented dryly. It was obvious that she didn't want anything to do with the Torn, and Jade couldn't blame her. They weren't exactly the liveliest of people.

"When are we leaving?" Jordan asked her.

"Right now." Answered Jade. "We have to get started as soon as possible, before my father sends people to intercept us."

"Alright, well, I hope to never see you again." Said Lela as she took the towel from Jade's hand and ushered the two out the door.

"Thank you for all of your help." Jade said as the woman closed the apartment door in her face. Jade sighed and walked past Jordan to the elevator. "How do you know her?" She asked him.

"We were friends before she fell in love with a human. I was young and stupid and I ruined our friendship because of it." He explained.

"How old are you, Jordan?" Jade asked. If he and Lela were friends then he would have to be considerably older than Jade.

"I'm twenty four in two months. How old are you, Jade?"

"You're the one who was charged with observing me, how old do you think I am?"

"Well," Said Jordan, "Your birthday is the seventh of May nineteen ninety five. So you'd be twenty by now."

"Okay, never do that again. That was a little creepy."

Jordan simply laughed and the two rode the elevator back down to their stolen Lamborghini and Jordan drove them to the nearest fast food outlet. Malice mewed from his seat in Jade's lap and Jordan said to her, "Wait here, I'll get something to eat and we can keep going. We have to leave as soon as possible."

Jade nodded and stroked Malice's soft black fur. She wondered what this 'training' would entail and whether or not the Torn they were going to see would be hospitable. As Malice started to purr, Jade thought of the war that surely lay ahead and for the first time since meeting Jordan, she was scared.
