Twenty-Six

Luke Iver stopped his car on the side of the road, the watch on his wrist ticking closer to 4am. He stretched, cracked his neck and Google searched for the closest fast food restaurant. His stomach growled in protest to the lack of sustenance within it.

Getting back in his car, Luke sped off down the deserted road. He didn't know what she looked like, but the woman he was following was powerful and gathering followers. He was curious as to why she'd been on earth for years now, but only recently had she been active.

Luke's arrival in New York City was dark and humid. He checked into a small hotel and settled in for the remainder of the night.

Jade knew she was scaring her. She was scaring herself. But physical activity was the only distraction that worked to keep her mind from the Darkness. Mikayla stared in shock as Jade sent the dummy flying with a roundhouse kick.

"Jade, are you alright?" she asked.

Jade looked up at her, surprised that this girl was showing support for her when aside from persuading her to leave the complex after Jordan left, Mikayla had held nothing but ill feelings towards her. "I'm fine," she replied, returning her attention and energy to her training, dropping to the ground to complete thirty-seven crunches.

"Jade-"

"I said I'm fine!" she snapped, tired of people trying to make her feel better. Tired of being expected to be happy. She'd killed someone. She wasn't supposed to be the same person anymore. She couldn't be.

After Mikayla went upstairs, Jade collapsed on her back on the concrete floor of the basement. She sensed the feeling rising in her chest and before she could stop it, it was bubbling over the surface. But this time, crying and yelling and screaming didn't ease the pain, nor did throwing her anger, sadness and disgust into the punching bags hanging from the ceiling.

Not knowing any other way, she dashed up the stairs, ignoring the elevator. Once in her room with the door closed she found what she was looking for. The pencil sharpener. Carefully, she took of the screw holding the blade in place. Rolling her left sleeve up, she held the razor to her shoulder and felt the release of her emotions.

Jade watched the last hint of pink water disappear down the drain and felt the pressure as Riley placed the seventh bandage on her shoulder. She sat in the bathroom, pale and numb. "That was so stupid, Jade!" Riley exclaimed, "you could have died! Do you know how much blood you lost? I should..."

More was said on the matter, but Jade found she couldn't hear the words. She tried, because she knew what it meant if she didn't, but she knew it was too late. The Darkness was back, this she already knew, but this time, it had consumed her.

Jade was now completely unfeeling. Nothing and no one could possibly release her from the lack of feeling in her heart.
