Twenty-One
It was several weeks before Maddy was herself again. When she left her room for the first time since that day, she was her usual bright and enthusiastic self. But when she thought no one was looking her way, Jade would see a dark and almost depressed look on her face.
The Darkness had returned to her. It was saddening to know. The once cheerful girl had been reduced to one who felt she had to hide. Jade hated that the angels had done this to her.
Seven months after the group had moved into the building, they had recruited forty-nine Fallen for their cause. Jade knew there would be more, but for this moment, they were strong.
Jade was staring miserably at the reflection of the pale scars on her back when Maddy entered her room. "I miss them too." She said, glancing at Jade.
Jade smiled wanly at her and took a seat on the bed, gesturing for Maddy to do the same. When she had, she said to Jade in a voice almost a whisper, "I know someone who can get your wings back for you."
Jade stared at her, "That's a cruel joke, Maddy."
"It's not a joke," Maddy told her, "I'm being serious."
Jade's heart filled with hope and anticipation swelled in her stomach. "You can't be."
Maddy nodded. "I am."
Jade could feel the grin stretching across her face. She knew it couldn't be possible and yet she was determined to try it. "I have to tell Jordan." She said. She then immediately raced out of her room and down the hall. Knocking never crossed her mind as she entered her boyfriend's bedroom, her hair flying around her face and her grey eyes shining in excitement.
"Jade, what's happened?" He asked.
"I can get my wings back." She told him.
Jordan seemed shocked but he quickly regained composure and shook his head. "No."
"I thought so too, but Maddy knows someone who can give me back my wings!"
Jordan started to take some interest, "Can they do it for all of us?"
Jade's smile faltered, "Well, no. He can only do it for me because I'm the First to Fall."
An emotion Jade didn't recognise flashed across Jordan's face. "No," He told her, "You're not doing it."
Jade stared at him in disbelief. "Why not? If you can give me a reason why I shouldn't do it, I won't." Jordan remained silent and Jade scoffed. "I thought you of all people would understand."
"Well I'm saying you're not doing it." Jordan said dismissively, opening a book as if the matter was resolved.
Jade, hurt and more than slightly confused, stormed angrily out of his room. Maddy was still in Jade's bedroom, sitting cross-legged on her bed. "What'd Jordan say?" She asked.
"Jordan doesn't want me to do it." Said Jade, lying down on the bed on her back. She didn't understand why Jordan had reacted the way he did. He knew better than anyone the extent to which Jade longed for her wings. He was supportive and sympathetic.
And then, completely unexpectedly, he tells her she isn't allowed to possibly get them back. This was Jade's only chance and Jordan was against it because he was jealous. Jordan had never before been jealous of Jade.
Jade had the unsettling feeling that something was wrong.
