Twenty-Two

The excitement that Jade felt bubbling up inside her was almost overwhelming. She was the closer to what she wanted more than anything than she'd ever been. The excitement was slowly suppressed by nerves.

She glanced beside her at Maddy and offered her a nervous smile. The two were standing in the foyer of an apartment building. The home of the man who would give Jade back her wings.

Finally, a man with salt and pepper hair and a lined face appeared and made his way over to the girls. "Good afternoon, ladies, I'm Alistair Harrison it's a pleasure to meet you." He shook each of the girls' hands and smiled warmly at them. The nerves in Jade's stomach dissipated slightly and she felt herself relax.

They followed Alistair into the elevator and rode it to the forty-second floor, where the three departed and Alistair let them into apartment number three hundred and two. "Where would you like to do this?" He asked.

Jade looked at Maddy, the nerves returning. "Wherever's easiest." She told him.

Alistair led them into a spacious kitchen and gestured for Jade to sit down. As she did so, Alistair placed his hands on her temples and she instantly felt a thrumming energy spread through her.

After no more than a minute, Jade felt herself getting weaker and shortly after two, she passed out.

Jade's body was filling with ice. It started at her head then made its way down her neck and now it was spreading through her chest. In its wake came the pain. Agonizing enough to make her scream and cry. She refused to open her eyes. She hoped that by doing so she could convince herself this wasn't happening.

She shivered as the cold seeped further through her. Then of course came the throbbing, stinging ache. Finally, unable to take the darkness any longer, Jade opened her eyes. She was lying in her bed, Maddy watching her from the corner.

In the back of her mind, Jade wondered where Jordan was. Then she decided that she didn't care. If he was too preoccupied to be there for her, she didn't want to trouble herself with thoughts of him.

"What's happening to me?" Jade asked Maddy.

Maddy came closer and as she did so, it became noticeable to Jade that she'd been crying. "Hayden Rune says that you have dark magic inside you, and-" She broke down into sobs. When she'd regained control of her emotions, she continued. "And it's killing you."

"No," Jade said, shaking her head, "It can't be, I can't be dying!" She refused to accept it.

"I'm so sorry, Jade. I had no idea what Alistair was really like! He told me once that if I'd been the First to Fall, he could have given me my wings." Maddy explained, "I'm so sorry."

"It's okay," Jade told her, "I don't blame you. You were just trying to help me."

As Jade lied there, cloaked in fear and freezing cold, pain rippling through her, she thought to herself, if death is going to claim me, I would prefer that it be fast.
