Forty-One
"What are you doing here?" Jade asked the only man she'd never expected to see again in her life.
"Surprised to see me, Jade?" he asked, obviously amused with Jade's shock at his arrival.
"I'm more surprised you left your office. It was like your home," she replied, "you never did like spending time with your family, father."
"My work is everything to me, which is why I can't stand for you to ruin me this way. If Heaven falls, all that I've worked for will evaporate like Australian rain!"
"And what exactly is it that you've been working so hard for? Would you care to tell me that?"
"You won't live much longer afterwards, I warn you. But there would be no harm I it," he said, "the Satanic Realm and I have an agreement with the mayor. Every three months, we would convert one hundred souls from the Satanic Realm to angels. Souls who were destined to be demons. In exchange, the Satanic Realm gave us a ritual to perform the Tearing, but would only give us the necessary ingredients if we continued to take in lost souls."
Jade thought about this for a moment, keeping her eyes on Judge Hillcrest. If this was true, why hadn't Luke told her? Surely he'd have known? Disregarding the matter the time being, Jade returned her full attention to the man who had ruined her life. "Now," he said, "I think it's time to say goodbye to the First to Fall. Your little 'uprising' was cute for a while, but now you're beginning to get on my last nerve."
"Jade!" She heard the call from her left, where Luke was standing, clutching a spirit blade, which he then threw to Jade. She caught it with ease and deflected the blow her father heaved at her.
She'd never used a spirit blade before, but in her hand the weight felt natural. She swung the blade striking the judge in the arm, to which he retaliated by slicing up Jade's off leg. She cried out, the blade leaving a burning trail of pain, but she remained upright.
Jade could tell she was losing a lot of blood, but in that moment she was only concerned with seeing an end to her father. "Ready to give up yet, Jade?" he taunted her smugly.
Jade glared, repositioned the spirit blade in her hand and ran at him. She knew he would his blade to her even before she started running. She rolled to the right at the last second and plunged the glowing silver sword into his back, burying it in his flash to the hilt. "Never," she whispered in his ear as he died.
