Thirty-Five
"What kind of demon is it?" Mason demanded in shock.
"It's called an erendo demon," Luke explained, "they particularly like stabbing their victims to death."
"How does he know so much?" Riley asked, pointing to Luke.
"He's Lucifer," Jade said, "he was supposed to come here and kill me. But he fell in love instead."
"Well that's adorable," said Lela, "but why haven't you stabbed him yourself yet?" she demanded.
Jade rolled her eyes, "we have bigger things to worry about for the time being."
Jordan was passed out, lying on the ground at the music festival with several of the Fallen surrounding him. Jade was worried that the exorcism wouldn't work, or that it would kill him. She wasn't prepared to lose him, not again. "How do we do this?" she asked, trying to keep calm for the sake of being a strong leader.
"We need rosemary, salt and five white candles, sprinkled with juniper oil," said Luke. Immediately, Riley and Aiden rushed off to collect the ingredients. They'd been gone only two minutes when Jordan's eyes snapped open, revealing a milky white film over his pupils and beautiful blue irises. Then his mouth opened and he started to wail.
"What's going on?" Jade asked, panicking.
"The demon knows we're going to try to exorcise him, it's trying to burn him up from the outside!"
"So what do we do? Can we stop it?"
"We can slow it down, get some ice! Quickly!"
Jade took off, searching for ice wherever it was available. She returned with only a small amount, as most of it had melted in the hot Australian night. She poured the frozen water over Jordan, hoping it would work to slow down the demon.
"Is there anything else?" she asked Luke, the fear she was trying to hold back creeping into her voice, making it obvious how vulnerable she felt.
"We hope," he answered, offering Jade a wan smile and hesitantly taking her hand in his own.
Jade knew she should have still been angry, and she should have refused him, but she was far too grateful to have someone to lean on now to turn even Luke down. She welcomed the safety and security his hold offered, despite the fact that only an hour ago, she had felt betrayed and broken by the very man who comforted her now.
She glanced sideways at Luke, hoping he wouldn't notice her watching him. He looked sincerely worried for Jordan's health, even though where Jade's affections were concerned, he was his competition. She admired him for that.
Before Jade could explore the inner workings of her heart much more, Riley and Aiden returned with the candles, salt, rosemary and juniper oil. "Set the candles on the ground around him in a pentagram then sprinkle a few drops of the juniper oil on each one, moving clockwise," instructed Luke, watching with concern.
The Fallen did as they were told, setting the candles up exactly the way they needed to. "Okay, now mix equal measures of the salt and rosemary and spread it on the ground between the candles, connecting them moving anti-clockwise," Luke continued.
Jade watched as Riley and Mikayla spread the salt and rosemary on the ground, ensuring they went in an anti-clockwise motion. "Now what?" she asked Luke.
"Now light the candles in exactly this order," he said seriously, "first the one at his right arm then the left. Then his right leg and his head, and then finally his left leg."
This was done and the Fallen looked expectantly at Luke, "the last step," he said, "is to pour the wax from the last candle into the first, connecting the pentagram."
Jade did this herself, watching Jordan attentively as she did so, hoping that it worked and Jordan would be returned to them.
When she put the candle back in its right place, Jordan's body seized and went limp.
