Twenty-Nine

~*~ Three Months Later ~*~

It was December 23rd and Jade couldn't stop thinking about the saddening fact that last year, she and Jordan had spent Christmas together. She was warming herself in front of the heater in the living area while Lela cooked dinner.

She remembered Christmas Eve, when Jordan had surprised her with eggnog and Christmas pudding. A small smile found its way to Jade's lips as she thought of the sweet moment.

She was suddenly aware of a presence beside her and she looked to her right to see Luke with snow in his brown hair and his amber eyes behind the lenses of his retro-style glasses bright.

"It's a little chilly outside," he said in his British accent, his teeth chattering. Jade laughed and pulled him into her arms, warming herself with the hug as much as she was warming him.

She was surprised when the feeling of Luke wrapping his arms around her made her heart beat faster. Confused and hurting slightly from the memory of the last time she felt that, Jade pulled away and sought out Mason and Riley.

"Do you think it'll work?" asked Riley once Jade had relayed her plan. It was rather time consuming, but it would draw the angels out of Heaven and allow the Fallen to fight back.

"I think it will, but we can never know for sure until we try it." Mason replied.

Jade smiled, "then it's decided," she said, "we leave tonight."

With that, Jade stood from the dinner table and headed upstairs to her room. She knew Mason would mass text the Fallen and tell them what was going on. Jade was strangely excited. This was the first step in something she'd been working on for so long. She'd lost so much and now things were finally coming together. It was enough to make the Darkness fade.

When Jade got in the elevator to head back downstairs to eat, she was joined by Luke. She was suddenly overcome with nerves, standing in the small space with him. She knew what was happening and it hurt to think that only a few months ago, she didn't look at anyone other than Jordan.

Jade was sure she was never going to see Jordan again, but she still held onto the hope that he still cared for her. She had to, or all that she'd suffered since he left was for nothing.

Finally, the elevator stopped and the doors opened, allowing Jaded to make her escape. But just as she was almost gone, Luke grabbed her wrist and pulled her to him. Wrapping one arm around her waist and cupping Jade's face with the other in one swift motion, their lips collided in a fast kiss.

Jade was surprised, but even so, she kissed him back, running her hands through his brown hair, her heart racing in her chest. This kiss was nothing like even the most passionate ones she'd shared with Jordan. This kiss held something more. It held something dangerous.

And Jade loved it.

So what do you think?! Were you expecting a triangle? ;)
