Thirty-Two

Luke lied in the backseat of the rental car, cloaked in a layer of sweat and knowing he'd really screwed up. The saying, 'sleeping with the enemy,' could never have been taken more seriously. He looked over at Jade, who was asleep beside him and admired her beauty for the thousandth time.

She stirred and Luke took the opportunity before she woke completely to slip out. He threw his shorts back on and left, stretching and enjoying the warmth of the sun on his chest. He knew he was lying to himself if he thought his 'supervisor' would let this slide. He was unsure as to exactly what to expect, but he was positive it wasn't pleasant.

It was only just dusk when the convoy arrived at the music festival in Coober Pedy. The place was alive with different types of music, people talking and laughing, stall owners trying to sell merchandise and engines revving in the distance.

Jade loved it. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxing and she couldn't have asked to have been there with better people. Following her morning activities, Jade had come to the painful conclusion that, as much as it hurt her to even think the words, she needed to move on from Jordan if she ever hoped to keep the Darkness at bay and be happy.

There were a few hours before Jade was to make her revolutionary speech, so she wandered around the festival, taking in the sights and sounds with rapt enthusiasm. It wasn't long before Jade ran into Luke, who upon seeing her, pulled her to him and kissed her passionately.

She wrapped her arms around his neck eagerly and sighed. When they broke apart, Luke said to her, "I have to tell you something, Jade."

"Sure, what is it?" she asked.

He took a deep breath, "it's going to be really hard for you to hear and I'm sure you'll hate me."

Jade frowned, "what is it, Luke? You're scaring me."

"That's the thing," he said sadly, "my name isn't really Luke Iver. It's Lucifer. I was sent from the Satanic Realm to kill you."

Jade stared at him in shock, refusing to believe what she'd just been told. And yet, she could tell it was the truth. She'd sensed darkness in him from their first kiss. "Why are you telling me this?" she asked, backing away in anger and fear.

"Because," he replied, "I was supposed to kill you the moment I came in contact with you, but I saw how beautiful you were and how broken and I couldn't do it! Every daub afterwards, I convinced myself I'd do it then, but my feelings for you only grew and I knew I couldn't ever bring myself to do it. I've helped you regain yourself and move forward in your uprising, which I was supposed to stop, because I love you!"

"Luke, or Lucifer, please, don't say that," Jade begged, "please, I just need to think of you as the awful person I'm supposed to believe you are."

"Can I prove to you I'm not an awful person?" Luke asked desperately.

"How on this earth could you possibly do that now?" she inquired.

"Turn around."

Jade did as she was told to find herself facing the last person she expected to see. "Jordan," she whispered.
