Thirty-Three
Jade could hardly believe her eyes. This couldn't possibly be happening, not now when she needed to be focused. She stared, her heart racing. Jordan was as beautiful as she remembered him, his black hair slightly longer and his blue eyes, sadly, dimmer.
Jade slowly moved towards him, hoping he didn't prove to be a mirage and vanish when she touched him. Because she was aching to touch him, to feel his skin on hers and know that what she was staring at so intently was real.
She was still slowly moving forward when she felt Luke grip her arm, "Jade," he said warningly, "be careful, he's not who you think he is."
She glared at him, "what do you mean?"
"He's been possessed by a demon."
Jade frowned, "how do you know that? He looks fine."
Luke glanced at the ground, sadness and regret in his eyes, "I did it. It's my fault he left, he wouldn't have done that if he was in control of his own actions."
Jade was close to tears, she could feel it building inside her, climbing up her chest like a ladder. "Why?"
"Please, Jade don't make me say it."
"Tell me, Luke."
"Jade, I really don't-"
"Just tell me."
"I can't, I-"
"If you love me, Luke tell me why!" Jade screamed, the anger, sadness and betrayal she was feeling flowing over the surface and erupting in a tearful, broken rage, "tell me why you broke me like that! Why you felt the need to ruin the last good thing remaining in my life! Tell me why, if you love me, you would do that."
Jade knew she was being unfair, but hadn't Luke been unfair in taking away the one person Jade had truly loved? Hadn't he brought it on himself? "Jade..." he trailed off, "please, you know I care about you-"
"Do I? Do I really, Luke? If you cared about me, would you have lied about who you are?"
"Would you have trusted me if I hadn't?"
"No, and for good reason! You can't be trusted! You just proved that to me!" she cried, pulling free from Luke's grasp and running towards Jordan.
It took everything in her not to look back.
