Thirty-Four

Luke watched as once again, Jade walked away from him. He hated it. The feeling of something vitally important to him leaving of its own accord was shattering. He'd never felt pain like this in his life.

He wanted to look away as Jade threw her arms around Jordan's neck, but like the scene of a horrific accident, he couldn't seem to tear his gaze from the demon's face. He was turning to leave when it happened. He only saw it from the corner of his eye, but it stood out in his conscience like wings on an angel's back.

Jordan's face was blank, but his hand was gripping a knife, poised over the back of an oblivious Jade. Even as he rushed forward, Luke knew he was too late. The blade would bury itself between Jade's shoulders, killing her slowly.

But while Luke was still four feet away, Jade spun and raised her arm, taking the knife in her forearm instead. She screamed, doubled over and clutching her arm. Luke hated to see her in such pain, but it gave him the chance to knock Jordan to the ground.

The man writhed and snarled, trying to break free and finish his task. It took all of Luke's strength to keep a hold on him, but he managed it long enough for Jade to partially recover and stare at him. "What are you-? You tried to save me..."

Luke resisted the urge to roll his eyes, "of course I did," he said, "I love you, remember?"

"What can we do for him?" she asked, gesturing to Jordan.

"Not a lot," Luke told her truthfully, "we can try to exorcise him, but when the demons go in, they're not intended to come out."

Jade frowned, "what are saying?" she asked.

"The exorcism could kill him, Jade. It would be a lot more humane for me to snap his neck now."

Pain flashed across Jade's beautiful features and Luke regretted the words, but he wouldn't take them back. They were true. "What's the chance the exorcism would work?" she asked, refusing to look at him.

"Only one angel has ever survived," he said.

"So it is possible then?" Jade asked her voice filled with renewed hope.

"Jade," Luke said gently, "the only angel to have ever survived it, he's different now. He has an air of darkness about him. He can't help it, it's just the way he is."

"What? How do you know all this?"

"Because I'm that angel."

Jade's eyes grew wide as she heard the words Luke had just spoken. It couldn't be true. She knew Lucifer had once been an angel, but the story was that he'd committed a crime so unfathomably sinister that he was sent to rule in another dimension entirely. The Satanic Realm was discovered primarily to be a prison for Lucifer.

But perhaps he did commit that crime. Perhaps the story was true to some extent. But perhaps they weren't Lucifer's own actions.
