12| I'm a lesbian too!
Nobody's POV
"Toni tell your wife to get that camera outta my face." Tamar joked and Toni laughed. Janet has this camera where she records everything on. She says it's for her documentary whenever she has one. Janet recorded most of Toni's pregnancy and she even captured Desiree saying 'Momma'.
"Say, momma or mommy..." Desiree's first words weren't even mommy or momma. It was dada... yup. Even though she has two mothers dada is an easier word for babies to say.
"Mmm, dada." Desiree babbled and Janet shook her head.
"You ain't got no daddy." Janet said and Toni laughed.
"Where is this video going anyway?"
"In our documentary when we get older." Janet smiled and Toni nodded.
"Now say momma, please I'm running out of space."
"Well turn it off." Toni said and covered the camera. Janet laughed and removed her hand.
"Girl bye."
"Mommy!"
"I said, momma."
"She likes me more. Thank you, baby." She kissed her daughter's cheek and Desiree smiled showing her gums and dimples.
"This is embarrassing. This is not going in the documentary." Janet said and turned off the camera. Toni laughed and shook her head.
Janet is on her way to go and pick up the girls from school, well Azuree. Skai didn't go to school today because she said that she wasn't feeling well. Although Toni and Janet knew that their daughter was telling a lie they let her stay home. Janet waited in her car and when she saw her daughter's class come out, she got out of her car. She walked over to the section where the other parents were and waited to sign her daughter out.
The teacher walked over to her and handed her a pen and a clipboard. She sighed next to her daughter's name and grabbed her hand.
Janet's POV
"Ms. Jackson your daughter said something very inappropriate today in class and I almost had to write her up. It's best if she tells you what she said." Oh lord. I nodded my head and the two of us walked to the car. I put her in her seat and she buckled herself in. I closed the door and headed to the driver's side.
"Zee, what is the teacher talking about? What did you say?"
"I dunno." I heard her say. I turned around and saw tears streaming down her face.
"Baby don't cry, you're not in trouble. Do you want to talk when we get home? Just me and you, okay?"
"Okay." I sighed and began the drive home. I hope she didn't say a curse word or something else. But teachers exaggerate things, especially white teachers. Once we got home I helped her out of the car and she went inside the house. I sighed and closed the door behind us.
"What's the matter with Zee?" Toni asked me and I shrugged. We walked to the couch and sat on it.
"The teacher said that Zee said something inappropriate in class but she didn't tell me what. I'm going to talk to her later but I already told her that she isn't in trouble."
"Mmm but what if she said a curse word and thinks that it's okay to curse since we can't punish her because you said that she isn't in trouble." Oh, I didn't think about that.
"Ummm."
"Exactly."
"Momma your daughter is grumpy." Skai said as she sat on the couch next to me. Toni laughed and shook her head.
"I know baby just give her some space and she'll be fine." I got up and headed to her room to talk to her. Let's see what bad thing she said in school. I walked into her room and saw her laying face down on the bed.
"Zee baby?" I called out for her and sat at the edge of her bed. She turned over and looked at me with a red nose and tears in her eyes. I picked her up and she laid on my chest.
"Baby you won't be in any trouble, just tell me what happened."
"You're gonna be m-mad."
"No, I won't. I promise."
"In school, we're learning about cultures a-and Sarah's parents are Greek so she's Greek."
"So it was your turn to say where you're from and what did you say?"
"I-I said that you guys are lesbians so I'm a lesbian too! And then the, the teacher said that she will tell whoever picked me up! I'm in trouble." Azuree sobbed and I rubbed her back. Kids brains are so pure and the teacher is stupid. She could've told Azuree that she was African- American or something. She made a big deal out of nothing.
"No baby you're not a lesbian, well when you get older you'll figure that out."
"Okay, are you mad at me?"
"No baby I'm not. You didn't know about your culture but I can show you. It's in your file, you wanna see it?" She nodded her head and I walked to our room with her in my arms. I opened my drawer and grabbed her file. I opened her file and we looked through it.
"It says that your father was born in St. Lucia and your mother was born here. But her grandmother is from Nevis."
"Oh, what are those places?"
"They are Caribbean islands. There are two parts to Nevis, St. Kitts and Nevis but your grandmother is only from Nevis. St. Lucia is way bigger than Nevis though. So you're Caribbean- American..."
"Okay, can we visit there one day?"
"Both places?" She nodded her head and I smiled.
"Sure. Whenever you're ready just let mommy or I know."
"Okay but not right now. When I get older."
"That's fine baby. You feel better now?" Azuree nodded again and I wiped her tears. I kissed her face and we headed downstairs. Toni looked at me and smiled.
"What did she say?"
"That she was a lesbian."
"Oh... she might be confused—"
"Okay, Evelyn." Tamar joked and I laughed while Toni rolled her eyes.
"Why did she say that though?" Tamar asked and I spoke.
"In her class, they are learning about cultures. She said that someone's parents are Greek so that makes the child Greek."
"Ohh and since we're lesbians she thinks she's a lesbian. She thought a lesbian was a culture..." Toni said putting the pieces together and I nodded.
"That teacher bout stupid as hell. The child didn't know that and she could've told Zee that she was African- American."
"Exactly what I was thinking but she's all good now. I found her file and explained her culture to her."
