Chapter 36: Another Reaping Day

Rudy POV

Four months went by since the announcement of the 75th hunger games. Throughout the 4 months is all the time we had to prepare for the third quell and reaping day. Victors trained if they could do so. Finnick and I were in great shape compared to Mags and Annie. We both kept up with our training like our yonder days when we had the free time to do so. We are concerned about Mags and Annie because they both are not fit and able to face these upcoming games. Finnick and I could tell they weren’t ready to enter the arena again.

These games will be different from past games. These games are made up by drunken fools, and the mentally unstable victors. Some others are just past there prime due to middle age or being elderly. The only ones who have a chance of winning are the career districts or the new recent victors. As these days went by, Finnick and I spent our time with our son and with one another as well as training.

The day before the reaping came. As a family unit we said our good-byes to one another. The hardest part of the day was saying our good-byes to our little boy Caspian. When we went on to talk to our 4 year old son, all we could do was cry for his daddy and papa. It broke our hearts that we have to do this. We did not want to do this and we for sure did not want to let him get out of our arms. However, we had no choice in the manner itself. That night we lent Caspian sleep in our room in between us. I have to say, I cried myself to sleep silently while Finnick rubbed my back. We slept together in each other's arms not wanting to let go of what we have in life currently. When I went to sleep peacefully as the warm feeling of love and family embraced us all.

The day of the reaping had finally come. Finnick and I got ready and dressed for the day. We waited till my parents came over so we could leave earlier than them. We also have to leave Caspian in my parents' capable hands.

Out the door we went hand in hand to the area where we were supposed to be. We left when Caspian was still asleep and once my parents walked through our open door.

Peacekeepers were outside and everywhere in the plaza. They were harshly instructing victors and people of all ages to get where they are supposed to be. Some of the peacekeepers tried to force me to hurry up by grabbing onto my arm tightly.

“Don’t touch me!,” I said with a snarl.

“My love, calm down. I know how you feel, but we have to keep on moving and our heads on straight. It is not the time to start picking fights,” said Finnick.

“Yeah, you are right, but they are just going to kill us if we don’t follow their orders,” I said.

“Yes, they would. Let’s just not evaluate things, my darling,” said Finnick.

The peacekeepers were watching us carefully and waiting to see if I did anything to do so they could strike me down. I nodded my head at Finnick, agreeing with what he had said. The peacekeeper let go of my arm when Finnick told him we will be going now. So that’s what we kept on moving forward.

“By the way, you look good, Finnick,” I said.

“Thanks, it's the outfit that makes my handsomeness shine today,” said Finnick with a smirk and full of arrogance.

“Whoever bought you those clothes was a genius. You look hot and get me turned on,” I said.

“Well, they are and the people who got me these clothes are the two people that I love dearly in life,” said Finnick.

“Don’t say that because it is not true. Yes, you have Caspian and I that love you. However, you have more people in your life that care and love you as well,” I said.

“I know, but we cannot afford to think like that. We have major problems ahead of us,” said Finnick.

“Hurry up! To the stage!,” yell a peacekeeper at us.

“Let’s just get through the day and we can think about the other stuff when we have the time. I love you, Finnick Odair,” I said while holding onto Finnick’s hand.

“Yes, let’s save it for later. Also, I love you, too, my love,” said Finnick.

While we were in our little world , peacekeepers were yelling at us to hurry up and stop talking. However, we didn’t care about the peacekeepers that were watching us and yelling at us. We did what we wanted to do. Finnick and I went on to give each other our last kiss for a very long time until we got the chance to see each other again.

We finally made it to the stage, while there we waited for everything to start like precious years with a reaping day. On the stage, I saw my parents, Leon, and Caspian in Leon’s arms. Caspian was in tears as he watched his papa and daddy on the stage. It saddens me to see him like that.

Like usual Lily’s come on to the stage and to start her speech.

“Welcome! Welcome all here today to celebrate the 75th anniversary and the third quarter quell of the hunger games. As always, May the odds be ever in your favor,”said LIly. I want to just groan or even punch her face in, but it is not her fault we are here standing to be reap again.

“As always, ladies first,” said Lily as she clapped her hands with excitement. She walked over to the small bowl of names that only have two peoples’ names to be eligible to participate for the third quarter quell. Same went for the men.

“The female tribute for district 4 is Annie Cresta,” said Lily.

Annie broke down in tears in front of everyone. She could not handle the reality of having to join the games again. However, sweet Mags raised her hand telling all she will be volunteering in Annie’s place.

“Look at that we have a volunteer this year! Give it up for Mags Flanagan this year’s female tribute!,” said Lily.

“Now then, time for the draw of the male tribute,” said LIly as she walked towards the other bowl. I was anxious about what was going to occur. My heart was beating fast and the world around me was collapsing around me. It was getting harder to breathe.

Finnick noticed my diploma and went on to hold my hand and squeeze it tight. That jester from him made me calm down a bit.

“The male tribute for district 4 is… Finnick Odair!,” said Lily.

I had to hold back a sob that wanted to erupt out of me. I almost lost my cool once again, but I got my act together because the people of the capitol were watching.

There is one thing that I was about to do. I was about to raise my hand to volunteer for Finnick. However, Finnick saw my movement and grabbed my hand to keep it down. He also gave me a look that screamed to me to stop, which I did.

“Here we are. He are your tributes for the 75th hunger games! May the odds be ever in your favor,” said Lily.

The peacekeepers started to push Finnick and Mags away to get them loaded into the car. Once in the car they will be taken straight to the train station to get them to the capitol as fast as possible. There were no good-byes this time around.

As I was being pushed off the stage, I could hear Finnick scream out,”Wait, I didn’t get the chance to say good-bye!” I never heard the response Finnick got but telling by his face it was not good.

I did not care that the peacekeepers were forcing me around. I scream out Finnick’s name as he disappears from my sight.

“Finnick!!!!”

Once I was off the stage I ran towards my parents and Leon. I went and grabbed Caspian from Leon’s arms. All I could do was cry about what just happened. As a family my parents and Leon went on to hug me and Caspian. All that was missing was Finnick.
