Chapter 43: Family and Coin

Rudy POV

After the night of Finnick’s and our family's reunion. We talked and enjoyed the time we had with each other. We all were happy to have Finnick back with us. When night came, I took Caspian with me to head back to our quarters. I didn’t want to leave Finnick’s side, but the doctors and nurses were forcing us out of the room so Finnick could get some rest. 

Once back to our quarters, I went on to lay Caspian to bed before going to update my parents and Leon about Finnick. They were all waiting for me in the living room as I went to put Caspian to bed. After I did, I went on to tell them that Finnick is fine and somewhat well. However, it will take some time to get him to his usual self as well as heal from his experience from being in the arena once again. All we could do is stay by his side and tell him we are here for him. My parents and Leon were just happy to hear that he was alive and somewhat healthy and that he will make a full recovery some time soon.

Three weeks have gone by since Finnick’s return to us. He is healing nicely and coming back to his old self. Meaning he is looking better by each day that goes by. Caspian and I went to visit him daily and made it into a routine.

Some days I would visit him alone so we could talk. I let him vent out his feelings and listen to all his worries. I helped him with his nightmares and helped him with his guilt that he was feeling. Some visits we will just sit there in silence. I did everything I could to help Finnick. Finnick’s mental state was in a vulnerable place, but Caspian and I’s constant presences helped him through his struggles and personal battles. Some nights I would sneak into the medical wing to be by Finnick’s side to take care of him and comfort him. My nightly visits also help with his nightmares as well. When I did go at night, I would leave Caspian to my parents or brother capable hands so they could look after him for Finnick and I. I could tell that our talks were helping with his healing as he got better each day that passed. Finnick also was healing greatly due to his motivation to be with his family and to protect them. 

Finnick was getting back on his own two feet by each passing day. District 13 wasn’t helping much with his mental recovery besides his physical ones. The people were more focused on Katniss and the future war at their hands. Finnick was just viewed as a pawn and disposal soldier. 

District 13 as a place gives me the creeps if I have to be honest. I really wanted to go home with my family, but I know we are safer here than back at home with looming threats over our heads. Fnnick also wanted to go home, but he understood his choices. 

Everything here was gray and bland. It will dry up anyone's emotion and make them crazy. Finnick would tie knots with a piece of rope to keep him cool and calm. I should mention that Katniss from time to time comes to talk to Finnick. Their talks usually end up being small talks and talking about Peeta; and trying to keep Katniss cool. Yeah, Peeta and poor Johanna were stuck at the capitol along with Annie as prisoners. 

Finnick and I were worried about Johanna because she is a close friend, but we know she is one strong woman. She will make it out of the hand of her minders, but she will back  with scars she will pull through from. She is a fighter after all. 

On the other hand, Annie will be safe as well, but we were still worried about her because she is my brother’s girlfriend after all. Annie will be used as a propaganda tool for the capitol. She will be fine. Unlike Finnick’s counterpart, her missing would not be effective in breaking him and his mental status as well. They were close, but not as close as she is with my brother. Whatever Annie did in the past does not matter now. We were worried about her because her missing broke my brother’ heart. My brother, Leon, took her absence hard, but it didn’t really show on his face because he will always wallow in his depression alone in his room. However, my parents, Caspian, Finnick, and I noticed and kept him grounded to reality just like we kept Finnick grounded when he lost his own family after his first games. We are a family and family sticks together unless they break your trust or do something unforgivable. 

Finnick’s recovery went faster than we thought. This time around he was not facing the loss of Annie or the downfall of his mental stability. Now, he has my family, Caspian, and I by his side to be around him and help him heal as well help us heal.

Throughout our time together, Finnick was clinging, but that was okay. I will always stand by Finnick’s side no matter what and I also welcome his embrace and comfort when he needs it. 

One day  Mrs. Everdeen came into the room were Finnick was recovering. With him was Caspian and I. We were bonding as a family and laughing with one another.When I saw her I just nodded my head at her. We didn’t really talk or get to know each other really. That was fine because her presences made me feel awkward and her personality rubbed me the wrong way at times due to her stubbornness and attitude problem. However, I will play nice with her and try not be a minor villain in her world. She went on the asked us to follow her because an announcement was about to be made about something. 

Katniss led us into an assembly hall. The hall is where the district 13 people gather to have meetings or hear announcements from their president. We  didn't know what the meeting was about. Yeah, no that is a lie. We do know but we acted like we didn’t. I did not ask her why we have to be here and I didn't really want to be here If I have to be honest. However, Finnick went on to ask her why we were here.

“Katniss, why are we meeting here?,” siad Finnick as he held Caspian in one arm and held my hand with his other free hand. 

“I told Coin, I’d be her mockingjay, but I made her promise to give the other tributes immunity if the rebels won. I asked her in a public place, so there were plenty of witnesses in hearing the things I asked for,” Katnis said.

“That’s good,” said Finnick. I tried to hide my distaste for Coin, so I just gave a smile to Capian and nodded my head in agreement with what they were saying.

Before, Katniss asked Coin for immunity to all tributes if something else occurred. Around that time, Peeta and Annie’s interviews were aired and played to all to hear. Their interviews were plan out by the capitol to gain favor and lessen the acts of rebellion across the districts. When the interviews were aired Finnick and I watched them. However, I am digressing and I guess that Katniss made her move due to the capitol’s actions and the safety of Peeta. 

I could care less about what the citizens of district 13 have to say because their opinions did not really matter. As long as they do their part and help win the rebellion for the rebels is what matters the most. If Katniss does not hot an arrow through Coin”s and Snow’s head, I will. 

Finnick and Katniss ended their small talk when Coin made her appearance on a podium above our heads. It just made her look like Snow. When I saw her, I let out a small scarf that Finnick heard. He just looked at me and shocked his head with a knowing smirk on his face. Finnick stood by my side with Caspian in his arms and our hands still intertwined with one another. 

I know we are going to have a talk after this event. Coin went out to call out to her audience for their attention. She went on to announce that Katniss had agreed to become an idol and the face of the rebellion as “the mockingjay”. Coin went on to talk about Katniss is only willing to do so If past victors, Peeta, Annie, and Johanna will be granted full pardons for any damage they do to the rebel cause. This got people talking and voicing their disagreements. The people were high in emotions and the crowd wanted their voices to be heard with their opinions in the matter at hand.

Finally Coin said her last word that came out as a dark omen for the future of the rebellion. 

“But in return for this unprecedented request, soldier Everdeen has promised to devote herself to our cause,” said Coin. The bitch was playing with the poor girl. Coin went on to put another nail on Katniss' coffin by saying,” it follows that any deviance from her mission in either motive or deed, will be viewed as a breach of contract. The immunity  will be terminated and the fate of the victors will be determined by the laws of district 13. As would her own. Thank you!,” said Coin.

“Good- luck, Katniss. You are going to need it,” I said In my own thoughts.

Coin is such a bitch. She knows how to work the crowd and find loopholes in contracts. Stupid fucking politicians. Here’s to another mark to my ever growing list of why I hate district 13, the capitol, Coin, and Snow.
