A little while later, Arlo and Elaine fall asleep again after arguing with John over whether or not we should involve the authorities. Thankfully, we convince them that we'll tell the headmaster in the morning and leave the decision up to him. Though, I figure it will stay between us and school staff for as long as possible.
"Got any paper?" I ask John once I'm sure they're out.
"There's some in my desk." John answers, for once not asking why.
I run up to his room, searching through the draws until I find a paper, pen, and envelope. I jot down my message as quickly as I can.
'Sis, how has your research been going? I encountered something that looked like your company's handy work today, you didn't get beat out by a competitor did you? Please get back to me soon, I'd love to know how you and the rest of the family have been doing lately.
-Sincerely, your little artic dog.'
I laugh as I realize how easy it was to fall back into my coded writing methods from before the readjustment classes. So far, it's been one of the only ones I've been able to get used to again.
I seal the envelope, wishing I had a wax seal for old times sake, before going to John's window. It was still open from the attack, I'd have to lecture him about that later. For now, I simply knock on the window seal four times before dropping the envelope into the cold night air. It's enveloped by a soft iridescent shimmer, disappearing before it hit the ground.
I then close the window as quietly as I can before running back down to the living room.
"Did she receive it?" John asks, having seen me send messages to my family this way before.
"I think so. Hopefully she can tell me something useful. I should be back on their radar after today. After all, they're probably the only organization in the country that could have pulled this off."
