"It's not just us I'm worried about, we have to protect the people we care about, and I failed to do that. Ember got to a good friend of mine about a month ago."
"Who?" I ask.
"Someone I met after you were arrested. We both read that book John's dad wrote, and I'm guessing you know what that book sparks in people." Kuyo explains.
"You too?"
He nods, pulling me towards a more empty part of the park.
"I'm being more careful now, I won't let them get me too, not when I'm our cousin's legal guardian."
"Good. You really shouldn't be risking it at all with how little the authorities will let us get away with." I tell him once we're alone.
"I know, but stepping in when the authorities won't is what we were raised doing. It felt wrong to just stop." He admits, his eyes glowing slightly like he wants to attack what he is thinking about.
"Yeah, I've been trying not to get too involved with John, but it hasn't been working too well."
"I guess we're both bad at being normal!" He laughs only to be cut off when something flies into his face.
He grabs it and holds it out for me to see. It's a big envelope, the kind important documents that can't be creased are sent in. There isn't an address in it, but it's sealed anyway.
"Sent anything to your sister recently?" He asks.
"Not official." I say, taking it from him and opening it.
As expected, it's a response to the letter I sent a few days earlier. There are no important documents, just the single paper. She probably only had work envelopes on hand.
"Read it at home, just in case." He tells me.
"Right." I nod.
"And, be careful. I won't ask why you're sending things to the rest of the family, and I won't badger you about Ember if your roommate already is, but you have to promise you won't do anything too risky."
"I won't push my luck, but the same goes for you."
"I won't either. Now let's get you home before your roommate finds out you left while sick. I saw how you snuck out." He laughs.
"Yeah, It's just a little cold, but she'd never let me hear the end of it!" I lie.
