I couldn't sleep after that. Instead, I stood at John's window. I knew that any response letter would be delivered somewhere less conspicuous than an open window since my sister's ability didn't allow her to check who might be watching, but I couldn't leave. I find myself standing there even as the sun starts to rise.
I watch, feeling the temperature change as that little sliver of light gets larger. I shouldn't feel anything. I hadn't felt anything since I was little, but the sun warmed my skin after the cold anyway.
I had wanted to play in the snow the winter after I turned eight but it was so cold that I couldn't enjoy it at first. That's when I decided to use my ability, just a little, to raise the temperature of the air around me. It was nice to be comfortable, so nice that I had rarely stopped manipulating the air to make it always just right since then.
I stand there, staring at the sun for a while as I hope Seraphina and I had been drugged with different things, until I hear John yelling.
"Hey! what's wrong? You haven't said a word yet, and you're acting really strange! Talk to me."
I don't hear a response, but the next thing I know, Seraphina is running into the room. Her eyes are fixed on his alarm clock. My heart sinks.
She grabs it, holding it tightly for a moment before crumpling to the ground.
"Sera?" John mutters.
"I can't activate my ability!" Seraphina exclaims.
"What?" John asks.
"This whole time I've been trying, and nothing. How...?" She trails off before starting again, "How did this happen? What did they do to me? Why-?"
John looks to me as if to ask if I can use my ability. I shake my head slightly, not wanting Seraphina to notice. She's already freaked out enough as it is.
"What am I supposed to do?" Seraphina continues, louder this time.
"Hang on, let's not jump to conclusions. You just woke up a few minutes ago after being knocked out for nearly a day. The drug's still probably in your system, and hasn't worn off yet. Let's give the doc a call. He'll know what to do." John comforts her, but I can tell he doesn't believe what he's saying. He dares to hope anyway; I try not to.
