John took to the role of bodyguard like a true actor. He followed behind me so quietly that I would have forgotten he was there if it weren't for the air he had about him. Like he was looking for the best time to tell me something bad, really bad.
"Alright, out with it already. What's got you so quiet?" I turn to him finally just as the dorms come into view.
"What do you mean?" He asks, but he's too caught off guard to pull off a convincing lie.
"You insisted on coming with me, why?"
"I just wanted to thank you for siding with me when my dad and I got into that argument earlier." He says.
"Why do I doubt that?" I ask.
He thinks for a long moment before sighing, "Fine. I actually wanted to talk to you about why you said you're hiding your strength. Like dad said, you're a terrible liar. I just didn't know how to bring it up."
"I wasn't lying." I grumble.
"Okay, you're terrible at telling half truths." He says pointedly.
"What do you want me to say?" I ask, desperate to get him to leave the topic alone.
"I'm not saying you have to tell me why you're doing it. I mean, I already have a pretty good idea, but you don't have to talk about it. I just wanted you to know that I don't blame you for anything that happened."
"Thanks, but I'm already over that." I tell him, but my voice breaks ever so slightly. I hope that he didn't hear it, but he gives me a knowing look.
"Come on, you're already late for curfew." He says, running on ahead.
I stay back for a moment, sighing despite myself. "When did I get so bad at keeping secrets?"
