"You... what?"
Jack: I made the Absolute Solver. It was my pride and joy. A one size fits all, Jack of all trades. The only thing in existence capable of completely disregarding the laws of physics and doing whatever I want it to do. You've never seen me use it because I had it locked away. Completely disabled due to... something that happened. Now though, that's not really an option. I'm going to need it to stand a chance against things, and to make sure nothing happens to you.
Uzi: That's... a lot. Is something going to happen to me?
Jack: To be honest, I don't know. It was never meant to be used in worker drones. I think you'll be fine though.
Uzi: Oh, that's veeery reassuring. If it was never meant to be used in worker drones, why do me and Doll have it?
Jack: My best guess is JC fucking Jenson. A while back I was forced to sell it to them. I should still be the highest-ranking administrator, but they could just use it in whatever they wanted.
Uzi: Well, that explains a lot. I guess the next step here is to go look for Doll.
Jack: I wouldn't recommend that just yet. You should learn to use The Solver, and I need to relearn it.
Uzi: We don't have time! We need to get after her!
Jack: We definitely have time. Anyway, you've already done one of the harder steps.
Uzi: Huh?
Jack: Simply activating it at all took me three days of constant, conscious effort. And you caught a bullet out of basically instinct. Let's go back to the spire. We'll see if we can't get it working.
Uzi: Fine.
I looked at N and V. They both were staring at me.
Jack: Back to the spire? You guys should get some rest.
They just nodded and walked out of the room. I figured V would have a reaction, maybe N, but I hoped it wouldn't be too bad. At least she still functions. Uzi looked at me in confusion. I met her gaze and sighed before walking out of the room, Uzi followed. We found N and V waiting by the main entrance. frightened worker drones were around the edges of the room, whispering to one another. N looked happy to see us, the initial shock must have worn off. V just gave me a look, before motioning to the control panel.
Uzi: Crap I think my dad has the key.
Jack: We don't need it.
I raised my hand and summoned The Solver. In a few seconds, the doors opened. V walked out and flew off to the spire.
N: I don't think I have the energy to carry both of you.
Jack: Don't worry about it. Take her, I'll make my way there.
N nodded and offered his hand to Uzi. She looked at me, confused, but took N's hand. He picked her up and shot into the air. I looked back over at the doors and waved my hand. They all slammed shut. I took a deep breath and focused. And in a flash of white code, I was at the spire. The first thing I saw was Uzi, who was staring at me with her mouth hanging open and her eyes wide.
Jack: Guess I'm not as out of practice as I thought. So, ready to learn?
Uzi: Uh, sure, I guess.
She took to it incredibly quickly. Within about five minutes she was flawlessly using translate and rotate. She had a bit of trouble with scale, and a bit more with edit, but that would work itself out with some practice. She struggled with teleporting, but I'm not sure if she really has difficulty doing it, or if she doesn't want to. Seeing how she did everything else, it's probably the latter. Maybe she just not comfortable with it. Maybe she just wants an excuse to be carried by N, I don't know. I have faith that if she needed to, she could. So I didn't push it too much.
I had regained almost full functionality with it. I was almost back to where I was before I stopped using it. I could teleport effortlessly, could throw things around with translate, spin anything as fast as I wanted with rotate, crush things with scale, and use edit to its full potential. And DAMN it felt good. It felt like I had reclaimed something I'd lost. A title I'd thrown away.
I am The Creator of the Absolute Solver. And I don't plan on abandoning that title again.V had gone back to her usual self, but I caught her staring at me a few times. Uzi and N were having a great time messing around with her new abilities, so I went to talk to V. She was sitting up on one of the balconies we had constructed. You could look out into the spire from high up, but it was difficult to see you. I climbed up the wall. She was sitting on the edge of the balcony, dangling her legs over the edge.
Jack: Hey.
V: Hey.
I sat down next to her.
Jack: You okay?
V: I'm fine.
She was pretty clearly not fine, but I knew she wasn't going to tell me what was bothering her.
Jack: Okay. If you ever need to talk to someone though, I'll listen.
She gave me a look.
Jack: And I know you probably won't ever take that offer, but it's there, okay?
V: ...okay.
I placed a hand on her shoulder. She glared at me.
Jack: I care about you V.
I stood up, stepped back, and leapt off the balcony. I heard V shout my name, but barely. The wind flying past me felt amazing. I always loved flying when I lived on Earth. I actually had a pilot's license, but I always wanted to fly on my own, without an aircraft. I teleported to the ground right before I hit it, removing all my momentum. I stretched my arms out and took a deep breath of that toxic Copper-9 air.
It feels good to be back.
