Me and Uzi had wings now, and we needed to learn to use them. I could mostly fly on instinct, but I didn't have the skills for precision maneuvers. Uzi could fly when controlled by The Solver, but otherwise she had no idea what she was doing. Currently, we stood atop the spire. Encouraging Uzi to jump off. She had some objections to this.
Uzi: What do you mean, jump?!
Jack: It's easier to start flying at a higher altitude. At least we're not throwing you off.
V: We still could.
Uzi: NO!
N: Maybe this is a bit much. I mean, she's only had her wings for a couple days. Maybe we should wait a bit longer?
Jack: Nah. She'll be fine. Just gotta take the leap.
Uzi: I'm not jumping.
Jack: Oh come on! It's not that bad! Anyway, if you're really about to die, one of us will save you.
Uzi: I don't need to be saved by you guys!
Jack: Really? Prove me wrong then.
Uzi: Fine!
Uzi took a step towards the edge and looked down. The spire was pretty high, so it was a loooong way down. She steeled herself, and jumped. Her wings flailed wildly, not catching the wind, but then she regained control. Uzi brought her arms to her sides and shot towards the ground. N extended his wings and went to save her, but I grabbed his hand.
N: Let me go! She's going to die!
Jack: No she isn't. Look.
Right before Uzi hit the ground, she spread her wings and soared into the air, rising to be level with us. N was relieved, and V looked genuinely impressed. Uzi looked the happiest I've ever seen her as she flew loops in the air. I extended my wings and jumped off, flying up next to her.
Uzi: This is awesome!
Jack: Told ya it'd be fine! Okay, landing is a lot harder. You'll probably crash, but it'll be a controlled crash, so you'll be fine.
Uzi: Not looking forward to that.
Jack: These kinds of things just take some practice, you get used to it soon enough. Let's head back up to the top. N can teach you landing, and I need to borrow V.
We flew back to N and V. I landed while Uzi flew circles around us.
Jack: N, teach her to land. V, come with me. You're good at precision flying.
N flew up to Uzi to help her land. She would run out of energy eventually.
V: Where are we going?
Jack: To one of the old mining facilities. It's broken down enough that you can fly right through the center of it.
V: Alright, lead the way.
I leapt off the spire and started flying towards our destination. Once V was next to me, I flapped once and shot through the sky. I've found the I can use The Solver to shield me from and ill effects of flying. Whether it be lack of oxygen at high altitude, or G forces. I was flying at Mach one. Just barely, and I couldn't keep it up for very long, but I could.
It was close to the max speed of the Disassembly Drones too. When making them, Tessa designed them, while I wrote the code. We had templates for things like personality, but combat, flying, tracking, and all the other things they could do, I had to design. N and J were good at flying, but V loved it as much as I did. She could maneuver through the bunker Uzi lived in at max speed if she wanted to.
Once we reached the facility, I slowed down and dove to one of the openings which went all the way through to the other side. Me and V landed next to each other.
Jack: Okay. Here.
V: This goes all the way through?
Jack: Yep. Checked it out yesterday. It's got some tight turns, and a narrow section where you have to tuck your wings in to get through the gap, but you can make it through.
V: You sure you can do this? If you crash, you're dead.
Jack: It'll be fine. If something goes really wrong, I can always teleport back out here.
V still seemed a bit worried.
V: Can you react that fast? I know you're good, but you said you mostly fly on instinct. And I know you'll be going through this as fast as you can. What if-
Jack: V, I'll be okay. I wanted you to go through it too. You can check it out, and if you really don't think I should do it, I won't. Okay?
V: Okay.
She spread her wings and flew off a bit to get a run up, then shot into the gap. After about thirty seconds, I saw her fly up over the facility and land next to me.
V: I think you might be pushing it, but you should be able to react to anything that goes wrong. That last bit where you have to tuck your wings in, that almost got me.
Jack: I'm prepared for it. If I don't think I can make it, I'll just teleport to the other side.
V: Okay. Good luck.
Jack: Thanks.
I flew away and lined up. Then, with one powerful flap, I shot through the opening. I dodged office chairs and desks, took ninety degree turns at full speed, but I wasn't too worried. Then came the last opening. I could see the world through it. I tucked my wings and went through. Unfortunately, I scraped my wings on the edge. I grunted in pain as I fell toward the ground. I regained focus and teleported back to V, the edges of my wings dripping blood, but otherwise unharmed.
V: Jack! Are you okay?
Jack: Scraped my wings on that last bit. I'll be okay. Don't think I'll be flying for a bit though.
V: But you'll be okay though, right?
Jack: Yeah, I'll be fine. Just a scrape.
V: Okay. While that heals, I want to look around. Saw some things that might be interesting.
Jack: Sounds good to me. Lead on.
We walked into the building. There wasn't a whole lot, just skeletons and office supplies. But there was something that caught V's eye.
V: Hey Jack, what's this?
I looked over, and my heart stopped. She was looking at an old VHS tape.
Jack: DON'T TOUCH THAT!
I was too late. She picked it up, and her head began to spark, shooting off tendrils of yellow energy. It stopped as soon as it started, but V did not move or speak. She just stood there. On her visor read a message I still saw in my nightmares.
