I stared into my monitor, reading through what I'd written so far. I didn't have any errors, but I didn't believe that. I kept working. My phone buzzed, and the screen lit up. I had a message from Tessa. I blinked the haze from my vision and opened it.

Hey

Hi

Haven't seen you recently. You okay?

I'm fine. Just working on something

Jack, I haven't seen you or heard from you in almost a week now. This isn't like you

Sorry. I've been busy

Busy for a week straight?

Yes. I'm working on something Tess

What?

A project. Doc wanted me to finish it

That's why I haven't seen you, isn't it? You've been working since you told me about what happened. You should take a break

I can't. I'm close to something big, I can feel it

That's what she said.

Really?

You're worse than I thought. Usually, you'd play right off of that. Have you been taking care of yourself at all?

Jack?

Goddamnit Jack. I'm coming over

You don't need to do that

Yes I do

I don't suppose there's any way I can persuade you into believing I'm fine?

No

Didn't think so

I put my phone down and groaned. Has it been a week? My perception of time isn't great, but it doesn't feel like a week. I checked my texts. The last time I talked to Tessa was a little over a week ago. I put down my phone and rubbed my eyes. Why did Tessa care. Not like I was particularly special. Wasn't anywhere near as rich as she was, and not as smart either. She put three robots back together from scrap. I can't even put together this project, even with the guidance Dr.☝︎✌︎💧︎❄︎☜︎☼︎ left me.

☝︎✌︎💧︎❄︎☜︎☼︎... I told you it was too dangerous. We don't know enough about black holes and singularities to be fucking around with them. Why didn't you listen? That's a stupid question. I know why. Science. You'd do anything to further your research. Even if you really shouldn't. Everything was justified with "It's for the good of science". I don't think I ever truly thought you'd listen all those times I told you to be careful, to wait for me to test your hypothesis, to not defy all laws of physics and nature. Too stubborn for your own damn good. And it got you killed.

"Jack? You in here?"

I jumped in surprise. I quickly realized it was Tessa. I got up and walked over to the door, opening it. The shorter girl stood there with her arms crossed.

Tessa: Finally. You look awful.

Jack: I imagine I do, yes.

Tessa: Can I come in? What have you been working on that's so important?

I stepped to the side, allowing her in. I shut the door and led her over to the computer.

Jack: This.

She scrolled through the hundreds of lines of code, examining it all.

Tessa: I've never seen anything like this. What is it?
